Lacrimispora is a genus of bacteria in the family Lachnospiraceae. Its type species is Lacrimispora sphenoides.[1] The genus comprises a phylogenetically distinct group of species formerly assigned principally to Clostridium.[2]
Taxonomy
The name combines the Latin noun lacrima, meaning "tear", with the Greek noun spora, meaning "seed" or "spore", referring to a tear-shaped spore.[1]
Phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses supported separating the Clostridium sphenoides clade from Clostridium sensu stricto and placing its members in Lacrimispora.[2] Desulfotomaculum guttoideum is treated as a later heterotypic synonym of L. sphenoides.[2] Clostridium indicum and Clostridium methoxybenzovorans are treated as later heterotypic synonyms of L. amygdalina and L. indolis, respectively.[3]
