The Embassy of Pakistan in Jakarta is the diplomatic mission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Indonesia. It is located in the Mega Kuningan diplomatic district of South Jakarta. The embassy represents Pakistan's political, economic, cultural and consular interests in Indonesia and also serves as Pakistan's diplomatic mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), whose headquarters are located in Jakarta.[1]

Pakistan and Indonesia established diplomatic relations on 28 April 1950, shortly after Indonesia gained international recognition as an independent state. Since then, the embassy has played a central role in promoting bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, education, culture and multilateral diplomacy. Both countries are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Developing 8 Countries, and several other international organisations.[2][3]

The embassy is also concurrently accredited to Timor-Leste, with the ambassador of Pakistan to Indonesia serving as Pakistan's non-resident ambassador to the country. Diplomatic relations with Timor-Leste are managed from Jakarta, where the embassy oversees bilateral engagement and consular matters.[4][5]

History

Pakistan and Indonesia established diplomatic relations on 28 April 1950, shortly after Indonesia gained international recognition as an independent state. Pakistan subsequently opened its embassy in Jakarta, while Indonesia established its diplomatic mission in Karachi, then Pakistan's capital.[6] The embassy has since served as the principal diplomatic mission of Pakistan in Indonesia and has played a central role in the development of bilateral relations.[7][8]

During the 1950s and 1960s, the embassy facilitated high-level diplomatic exchanges and agreements in trade, civil aviation, technical cooperation and cultural relations. Pakistan and Indonesia also worked closely through the Bandung Conference, the Colombo Plan, and later the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), strengthening political and economic ties.[9]

Following the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the embassy assumed an increasingly important regional role. After Pakistan became an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner in 1993, it also began serving as Pakistan's principal diplomatic liaison with the organisation's Secretariat in Jakarta, coordinating cooperation on political, economic and regional issues.[10][11]

The embassy contributed to expanding bilateral cooperation in defence, trade, investment, education and parliamentary exchanges.[12] The embassy also promotes Pakistan's cultural and economic interests in Indonesia through trade exhibitions, cultural programmes, academic exchanges and engagement with the Pakistani community.[13][14]
