^ A: A right-wing party, AfD is considered to be part of the radical right, a subset of the far right that does not oppose democracy.[1] | |
The AfD Saxony-Anhalt is the state association of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The state association is led by the member of parliament Martin Reichardt as state chairman.[2] With André Poggenburg as the top candidate, the AfD Sachsen-Anhalt ran for the first time in a state election in 2016 and subsequently represented the second largest parliamentary group in the seventh state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt.
In January 2021, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Saxony-Anhalt classified the state association as a suspected right-wing extremist.[3] In November 2023, the state association was classified as a “definite right-wing extremist effort”.[4] This classification gives the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Saxony-Anhalt broader discretion in using intelligence efforts to monitor the group.
Controversies
The AfD parliamentary group in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt called for a demonstration in Magdeburg at the end of January 2022 against the CORONA protective measures. It remained unclear whether the AfD Saxony-Anhalt or the AfD parliamentary group organized and financed the demonstration. The faction receives state money and is therefore forbidden to finance political events.[5]
Cronyism and embezzlement of public funds
At the end of 2025, escalating power struggles within the party revealed that almost all top politicians of the AfD Sachen Anhalt had diverted public funds to employment with friends and relatives.
One day before Christmas 2025, the state executive committee of the AfD Saxony-Anhalt requested the expulsion of Bundestag member Jan Wenzel Schmidt from the party, which was confirmed by the state arbitration court. This marked the beginning of the exposure of widespread cronyism at the expense of the state among the AfD's right-wing extremists.[6]
The AfD's lead candidate for the 2026 state elections, Ulrich Siegmund, is significantly involved. His father, Andreas Siegmund, allegedly worked for the three AfD MPs Matthias Büttner, Martin Reichardt and Thomas Korell and received public money for it.[6]
The only two female AfD-MPs Margret Wendt and her daughter MP Nadine Koppehel hired friends and relatives for sham positions at the state's expense. Koppehel employed a total of 16 staff members simultaneously in her constituency officein Rosslau-Dessau. Three staff members per state parliament MP were average at this time. According to the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, the office is identifiable only by a handwritten, yellowed nameplate bearing the letters "AfD" and is no larger than a three-room apartment, even though a total of 23 people were reportedly employed there.[7][8]
Integration of organized right-wing extremists
The AfD in Saxony-Anhalt offers experienced right-wing extremists from across Germany an organizational structure and employment. A number of cadres from the HDJ and the Identitarian Movement support the party’s election campaigns and party organization.[9] Several are employed at public expense by the AfD parliamentary group in the state legislature Landtag Saxony-Anhalt.
These include cadres from the HDJ Eric Kaden, Patrick Harr (press spokesperson and managing director of the AfD parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt[10]) and Laurens Nothdurft (legal counsel for the AfD parliamentary group)[11].
From the Identitarian Movement AfD Saxony-Anhalt employees IB cadre and Autonom Nationalist Dorian Schubert and author of Antaios Verlag Till Lucas Wessels.[12] Schubert was personally proposed by Ulrich Siegmund to work for him as a social media consultant.
