Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST; simplified Chinese: 浙江科技大学; traditional Chinese: 浙江科技大學; pinyin: Zhèjiāng kējì dàxué) is a public university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China. Founded in 1980, the university is designated as a pilot institution for Sino-German cooperation in higher education and describes its educational model as application-oriented, drawing on the German Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences) tradition.[2]

History

ZUST traces its origins to 1980, when it was established as the Hangzhou Industrial College Affiliated to Zhejiang University (杭州工业专科学校), a joint undertaking of Zhejiang University and the Hangzhou municipal government.[3] Over the following two decades the institution underwent several name changes as its scope broadened from a specialized affiliated college toward a comprehensive institution in science and engineering.

In August 2001 it was renamed Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (浙江科技学院), reflecting its transition to a multi-disciplinary institution.[2] In October 2003, the Zhejiang Provincial Light Industry School was fully merged into the university, expanding its programs in fields such as packaging, printing, and light chemical engineering.[2]

A defining feature of the university's institutional identity has been a long-running cooperative education partnership with Germany. ZUST serves as a base institution for the "Sino-German Forum" and has stated that the program has supported several hundred undergraduates in pursuing further study in Germany over its history.[4]

In late 2023, the Ministry of Education approved the university's upgrade from a "university of science and technology" (学院) to full "university" (大学) status, formally adopting the Chinese name 浙江科技大学; the change took effect in early 2024.[5] The upgrade was part of a broader wave of provincial colleges elevated to university status across China around the same time.[5] In January 2024, following an earlier designation in April 2023, Professor Chen Jianmeng — a specialist in environmental biotechnology and catalysis — was appointed the university's president.[6]

Academics

As of 2024, ZUST is organized into 17 secondary colleges and one teaching department, offering 57 undergraduate programs alongside postgraduate degrees comprising six first-level discipline master's programs, eight professional master's programs, and 39 second-level master's programs.[7] Its academic units include the School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Energy Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Technology, the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering, the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and the School of Environment and Natural Resources, among others.[7]

The university offers instruction in English in a number of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including Robotics Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Media Technology, and Architecture, aimed primarily at international students.[8][9] The university states that its international-student programs have passed the Ministry of Education's Quality Accreditation for International Students Education.[4]

Sino-German cooperation

ZUST is designated a pilot institution for Sino-German cooperation in higher education and hosts a Chinese-German Institute offering German-language instruction.[2] The partnership, modeled on the German Fachhochschule system, has shaped the university's emphasis on applied, industry-oriented curricula, and the university has said it has facilitated study opportunities in Germany for several hundred of its students.[4] A North German Research Center has also been established at the university to support joint research activity with German partners.[4]

Research

ZUST's research activity is concentrated in applied sciences and engineering, spanning fields such as physics, electronic engineering, civil engineering, and polymer chemistry.[10] Faculty at the university have received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China for projects including studies of optical magnetometry and EEG-based stroke classification.[11]

The university hosts several provincial-level research platforms, including the Zhejiang Province International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Environmental Microbial Technology.[12] Visiting scholars have included Karl H. Johansson, a Swedish Research Council Distinguished Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology.[13] The university runs talent-recruitment programs, such as a "100 Young Professors" initiative and a "Qiushi" Chair Professorship, aimed at attracting early-career and senior researchers.[14]

Rankings

ZUST is not among the institutions included in China's "Double First-Class" initiative, which designates the country's top-tier universities and disciplines for global competitiveness.[15] In international rankings that assess a broader tier of institutions, U.S. News & World Report placed ZUST at No. 1543 in its Best Global Universities rankings,[16] and other ranking aggregators have placed it in a comparable band among institutions worldwide.[17] [a]

Campus and student life

The university operates two campuses: the main Xiaoheshan campus in Hangzhou and a branch campus in Anji.[2] Student housing includes single and shared dormitory rooms furnished with air conditioning, hot water, and basic furniture; the university has quoted approximate monthly costs of CNY 1,200 for single rooms and CNY 600 for double rooms, alongside a refundable deposit.[18]

International students are supported through a dedicated School of International Education, which handles visa processing, accommodation, and scholarship administration,[19] as well as an International Students Union and International Cultural Exchange Association.[20] Recurring campus events include an International Culture Festival, welcome events for new students, and an annual graduation ceremony.[21] Students also take part in national competitions such as the "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.[22]

Administration

The university's central administration is based at the Xiaoheshan campus and is organized into offices covering academic affairs, personnel, finance, student affairs, and international cooperation, with each secondary college maintaining its own leadership for academic and faculty matters.[23] Chen Jianmeng has served as president since January 2024, having previously led a number of national research projects in environmental biotechnology, including work funded under China's 863 Program and by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.[6]
