Streptococcus orisratti is a species of catalase-negative, Gram-positive, coccus-shaped bacteria from the genus Streptococcus. This species was first isolated from Sprague–Dawley rats, hence its name. Its type strain is A63T (=ATCC 700640T).[1]
Isolation and ecology
S. orisratti was first isolated from the tooth surfaces of laboratory Sprague–Dawley rats.[1] Two strains isolated from pigs and previously classified as Streptococcus suis serotypes 32 and 34 were reassigned to S. orisratti on the basis of biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA and cpn60 gene sequences.[2]
A 2025 whole-genome study identified S. orisratti isolates from diseased pigs. The isolates had been recovered from the upper respiratory tract, lung, and a heart valve affected by endocarditis. [3] S. orisratti isolates has also been recovered from sow milk.[4] Two Streptococcus strains isolated from independent wastewater samples in Shenzhen, China, were found to be closely related to S. orisratti and were proposed as the putative subspecies S. orisratti subsp. futianensis.[5]
