National Board of Review: Top Ten Films

The following is a list of the Top 10 Films chosen annually by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, beginning in 1929.[1][2]

Historys

The National Board of Review’s relationship with the Oscars is particularly striking because, for decades, its annual Top 10 list contained at least one film that would eventually win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

What makes the National Board of Review’s Top 10 list so interesting in relation to the Oscars is the extraordinary streak it maintained for nearly ninety years: from 1930 through 2018, every eventual Best Picture winner appeared somewhere among the NBR’s annual Top 10 films. The NBR is not an industry voting body like the Academy; its members are a relatively small group of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals, and academics who watch hundreds of eligible films each year and discuss them before choosing what they consider the year’s best work. Its list therefore isn't really meant to predict the Oscars—it's simply a reflection of its members' collective taste, with one film named Best Film and the remaining ten selections generally presented alphabetically rather than as a ranking. The streak finally ended with the 2019 awards season: Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite won the Oscar for Best Picture, but while the NBR honored it as Best Foreign Language Film, it did not include it in its overall Top Films list, which instead featured movies such as 1917, Knives Out, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and Uncut Gems, while naming The Irishman its Best Film of the year. In other words, for decades the NBR's broad view of the year's best cinema had always managed to overlap with the Academy's eventual Best Picture choice—until Parasite became the remarkable exception that finally broke the streak.
