The Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria (Italian: Città metropolitana di Reggio Calabria) is a metropolitan city in the region of Calabria in southern Italy. Its capital is the city of Reggio Calabria. It has a population of 510,590 in an area of 3,210.37 square kilometres (1,239.53 sq mi) across its 97 municipalities.[2][1] It replaced the province of Reggio Calabria in 2017.

Comprising the "toe" of the boot-shaped Italian Peninsula, the Aspromonte massif dominates the western part of the metropolitan city's territory: with its long coastline, it is a popular tourist destination during the summer.

History

The Metropolitan City was created by the reform of local authorities (Law 142/1990), and then established by the Law 56/2014.[5]

Government

The Metropolitan City is headed by the Metropolitan Mayor (sindaco metropolitano) and the Metropolitan Council (consiglio metropolitano).

Demographics

As of 2026, the population is 510,590, of which 48.8% are male, and 51.2% are female. Minors make up 15.8% of the population, and seniors make up 24.6%.[2]

Immigration

As of 2025, immigrants make up 7.6% of the population. The 5 largest foreign countries of birth are Romania, Morocco, India, Ukraine, and Argentina.[8]
