Geniearth (Japanese: ジーニアース) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rensuke Oshikiri. It was serialized in Akita Shoten's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Champion from September 2021 to July 2022, with its chapters collected in five tankōbon volumes.
Plot
In the near future, a genetic mutation begins to emerge among humans, with approximately one in every thousand people developing extraordinary abilities. Those who possess these abilities come to be known as "Geniuses." One such individual, Fuwa Masaru, regards ordinary humans as an inferior species and seeks to eliminate them. He attacks a police station and calls on other Geniuses to join him. His friend, Hajime Suzuki, tries to stop him, but Fuwa refuses to back down and is eventually shot by a sniper. The incident leads the Japanese government to take increasingly aggressive measures against the Geniuses.
The government begins conducting widespread blood tests to identify Geniuses and introduces measures to separate them from the rest of society. It also establishes a special investigative unit tasked with apprehending Geniuses deemed dangerous. Meanwhile, Hajime, who considers himself an ordinary human, becomes increasingly entangled in the conflict. He encounters Fuwa's friends, including Kai Shinjuro and Tsukumo Hoan, and gradually finds himself drawn into the growing struggle between Geniuses and the authorities.
As the government's crackdown intensifies, Hajime is taken into custody by the investigative unit and subjected to harsh interrogation. Elsewhere, Forseti, an organization formed to protect Geniuses, launches an operation to rescue those held by the authorities. The confrontation escalates as the government's forces and the Geniuses become increasingly hostile toward one another.
Forseti is led by Nero, who initially presents himself as an advocate for the Geniuses. His personal ambitions gradually come to light, however, and tensions develop within the organization. As Nero pursues his own objectives, Forseti begins to break apart, leaving its former members divided among competing factions while Hajime and the other Geniuses become caught between them and the government's forces.
Hajime eventually discovers that his connection to Nero goes back much further than their encounters on Earth. The two were involved in a struggle for succession on their home planet, Enceladus. While Nero seeks to take control of Earth, Hajime wants to preserve it as it is. Their opposing goals bring their old rivalry to the surface, with the increasingly numerous Geniuses becoming entangled in their conflict.
Nero later learns that he may be in line to inherit the throne of Enceladus. His growing uncertainty about his future coincides with further upheaval among the Geniuses. As they appear in different parts of the world, violent incidents spread and society descends into chaos. Increasingly disillusioned, Nero decides that Earth itself must be destroyed. Hajime ultimately confronts him in an attempt to prevent the destruction of the planet, bringing their long-running conflict to an end.
Creation
Geniearth was written and illustrated by Japanese manga artist Rensuke Oshikiri. The series was conceived as a departure from the genres of his preceding works. Oshikiri has explained that he becomes bored when working in the same genre consecutively and instead tends to choose the kind of story that he himself would like to experience at the time he begins a new series. After working in genres including comedy, romance, and horror, he chose to make Geniearth a violent science-fiction and superpower manga.[4][5]
Oshikiri described Geniearth as the work in which his violent tendencies "exploded to the hilt." When developing the series, he and its editor, Matsuoka, placed their own enjoyment of the work first. Oshikiri identified himself as the first reader of the manga, followed by Matsuoka, and said that they prioritized whether they themselves enjoyed the work before considering whether readers would follow him into a different genre.[4]
The concept also grew out of Oshikiri's longstanding interest in stories involving superpowered characters. He said that he had watched almost the entire Marvel film series and had enjoyed numerous foreign television series about people with superpowers, including Heroes, The 4400, and The Boys. He particularly enjoys stories in which characters with special abilities confront unjust villains, an interest that informed the superpowered action framework of Geniearth.[4]
Oshikiri's approach to Geniearth was also connected to his interest in emotional catharsis. Discussing the series' character whose physical strength increases through the negative emotions generated by bullying, he explained that he had never personally experienced bullying, but that depictions of bullying in films and television make him angry because he has a low tolerance for unreasonable evil. He consequently wanted his stories to contain reversals of fortune that could provide a cathartic experience for readers.[4]
