The Embassy of Iran in Islamabad (سفارت جمهوری اسلامی ایران در اسلامآباد) is the diplomatic mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Located in the Diplomatic Enclave in Islamabad, it serves as Iran's principal diplomatic representation in Pakistan and is responsible for maintaining bilateral political, economic, cultural and consular relations between the two countries.
The embassy is headed by the Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan, who represents the Government of Iran in Pakistan. In addition to the embassy in Islamabad, Iran maintains Consulates-General in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Peshawar. The embassy provides passport, visa, attestation and legalisation services for Iranian nationals and foreign citizens requiring documentation relating to Iran. It also provides assistance to Iranian citizens residing in or visiting Pakistan.[1][2]
History
Iran was among the first countries to recognise Pakistan following its independence in August 1947.[3] Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established shortly afterwards, and Iran opened its diplomatic mission in Pakistan.[4] Following the transfer of Pakistan's capital from Karachi to Islamabad, the embassy was relocated to the Diplomatic Enclave in Islamabad.[5][6]
Throughout the Cold War, Iran and Pakistan maintained generally close diplomatic relations through bilateral visits, regional cooperation and membership of international organisations. Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the embassy continued to serve as the principal diplomatic channel between the two countries despite changes in Iran's political system and shifts in regional politics.[7]
Relations have included cooperation in border management, regional security, trade, energy, transportation, counterterrorism and cultural exchanges. The embassy regularly facilitates high-level visits by heads of state, foreign ministers, parliamentary delegations and military officials.[8][9]
In January 2024, diplomatic relations briefly deteriorated following cross-border missile strikes carried out by Iran and Pakistan.[10] Both countries temporarily recalled their ambassadors before diplomatic engagement resumed later that month. The embassy subsequently returned to normal diplomatic operations.[11][12][13]
In April 2026, the embassy played a supporting diplomatic role during the Islamabad Talks, a series of negotiations hosted by Pakistan between representatives of the United States and Iran, during the 2026 Iran war.[14][15] While the talks were held in Islamabad under the auspices of the Government of Pakistan, the embassy facilitated coordination with the Iranian delegation and assisted in diplomatic engagements surrounding the negotiations.[16][17]
Consulates-General
In addition to its embassy in Islamabad, Iran maintains four Consulates-General in Pakistan, which provide consular services to Iranian nationals in Pakistan, promote bilateral trade and cultural relations, and facilitate diplomatic engagement at the provincial level.[18]
