The Dholpur–Gangapur City railway line is a broad-gauge railway line under construction in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The project comprises the conversion of the former Dholpur–Sarmathura railway line from narrow gauge to broad gauge, together with the construction of a new railway line from Sarmathura to Gangapur City via Karauli. The total sanctioned length of the project is 144.60 km (89.9 mi), comprising 69.10 km (42.9 mi) of gauge conversion and 75.50 km (46.9 mi) of new railway line.[1]
The railway corridor passes through the districts of Dholpur, Karauli and Sawai Madhopur. On completion, it will provide the first railway connection to Karauli district and establish a direct broad-gauge rail corridor between Dholpur and Gangapur City. The project is being executed by the North Central Railway under the Ministry of Railways.[2]
History
Dholpur State Railway
The origins of the Dholpur–Gangapur City railway line date back to the Dholpur State Railway, a narrow-gauge railway established by the erstwhile Dholpur State. The railway project was sanctioned by Maharaja Ram Singh on 14 December 1905 to improve transport and trade within the princely state. The first section between Dholpur and Bari was opened to traffic in February 1908 as the Dholpur–Bari Light Railway. In 1914, the railway was renamed the Dholpur State Railway, and the line was extended to Tantpur on 1 July 1914 and further to Sarmathura on 1 March 1929, completing the Dholpur–Sarmathura railway line.
Following the integration of Dholpur State into the Republic of India, the railway became part of Indian Railways. The narrow-gauge line served the region for several decades before passenger services were discontinued on 31 March 2023 to facilitate its conversion to broad gauge.
Broad-gauge conversion and extension
The present Dholpur–Gangapur City railway line project combines the conversion of the existing Dholpur–Sarmathura narrow-gauge railway with the construction of a new broad-gauge railway line from Sarmathura to Gangapur City via Karauli. The project has a total sanctioned length of 144.60 km (89.9 mi), comprising 69.10 km (42.9 mi) of gauge conversion and 75.50 km (46.9 mi) of new railway line.[3]
The Final Location Survey (FLS) for the new railway line was completed before the project received approval from the Ministry of Railways. The project has since been included in successive Railway Budgets, with funds allocated for land acquisition, earthwork and other preliminary construction activities.[4][5]
The railway line is intended to improve connectivity across eastern Rajasthan by linking Dholpur, Bari, Sarmathura, Karauli and Gangapur City through a continuous broad-gauge corridor. On completion, Karauli district will receive its first railway connection.[6]
Route
The Dholpur–Gangapur City railway line begins at Dholpur Junction and follows the alignment of the former narrow-gauge railway through Bari, Tantpur and Sarmathura. Beyond Sarmathura, a new broad-gauge line is under construction via Karauli to Gangapur City Junction, where it will connect with the New Delhi–Mumbai main line.
The railway corridor traverses the districts of Dholpur, Karauli and Sawai Madhopur. The project is expected to strengthen rail connectivity in eastern Rajasthan by linking the Chambal region with the Delhi–Mumbai trunk route.[7]

Project
The Dholpur–Gangapur City railway line has been approved as a broad-gauge railway project comprising the conversion of the existing Dholpur–Sarmathura narrow-gauge railway and the construction of a new railway line from Sarmathura to Gangapur City.
The project has a total sanctioned length of 144.60 km (89.9 mi), including 69.10 km (42.9 mi) of gauge conversion and 75.50 km (46.9 mi) of new railway construction.[8]
The Ministry of Railways has included the project in successive Railway Budgets and sanctioned funds for land acquisition, earthwork, bridges and other preliminary works. Construction is being undertaken in phases by the North Central Railway.[9][10]
Construction
The Dholpur–Gangapur City railway line is being implemented in phases by the North Central Railway. The project includes the gauge conversion of the former Dholpur–Sarmathura narrow-gauge railway and the construction of a new broad-gauge line from Sarmathura to Gangapur City.
Following the completion of the Final Location Survey (FLS), the Ministry of Railways accorded approval for the project and included it in successive Railway Budgets. Initial funding was provided for land acquisition, earthwork, bridges and other preliminary works. Construction activities are progressing in phases, subject to the availability of land and budgetary allocations.[11][12]
As of 2026, land acquisition, formation work and the construction of bridges and other civil engineering structures are underway at various locations along the alignment.[13]
Infrastructure
The railway line is being developed as a single-track broad gauge. The sanctioned project length is 144.60 km (89.9 mi), comprising 69.10 km (42.9 mi) of gauge conversion and 75.50 km (46.9 mi) of new railway line.[14]
The line is planned to be electrified as part of the project and constructed to Indian Railways broad-gauge standards.
