Dea Dardanica

Dea Dardanica found in Vërban, Kosovo

Dea Dardanica, also known as the Dardanian Goddess, is an archaeological artifact found in Kosovo that represents an ancient deity associated with the Dardani, an Illyrian people.[1] The artifact was found in the archaeological site of Vërban, which is located in the municipality of Viti.[2]

Overview

Dea Dardanica is the very conventional name used in modern scholarship for a goddess attested in ancient Dardania,, mainly through inscriptions and votive monuments from the called Roman period. The evidence is limited, and no source preserves a full mythology or description of her cult at all.[3][4]

The goddess has been interpreted for the experts as a continuation of a local Dardanian deity, as a Roman-period expression of regional identity, or as a combination of both, that can be too. The debate reflects the context of the finds, many of which belong to the imperial period and are associated with military or administrative personnel.[5] Among the best examples are the altars from "Smira and Vendenis", whose inscriptions ar mention members of Legio IV Flavia Felix.[6][7]

The iconography associated with Dea Dardanica has been connected with protection, fertility, territorial identity and, in some studies, solar or cosmological symbolism, among others ideas. These interpretations remain tentative, since the surviving material does not define her attributes systematically.[8]
