Centerport (historically known as Little Cow Harbor and Little Neck) is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located within the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 5,822 at the time of the 2020 census.[2]

History

What is now Centerport was originally inhabited by Matinecock Native Americans.[3][4][5] In the 17th century, European colonists – primarily English along with some Dutch – began to settle the area.[3][4][5]

Suydam House, a saltbox house built in 1730, is one of the oldest surviving houses in Centerport.[6]

Camp Alvernia in Centerport was the first Catholic summer camp in the United States, established in 1888.[7] The camp remained in operation as of 2026, serving over 900 local children aged 3–14 each summer.[7]

During the Gold Coast era, numerous wealthy individuals constructed large country estates in Centerport.[8] Among the best-known examples of such estates in Centerport is the estate of William Kissam Vanderbilt II, known as Eagle's Nest; it is now the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium.[8]

In 1931, the portion of Centerport known as Little Neck proposed incorporating as a village; the proposed village was to be known as the Incorporated Village of Center Neck.[9] The territory would have included several large estates – including the Vanderbilt estate. The proposal was defeated by residents of the proposed territory on October 24, 1931, by a vote of 49-to-40; many residents who opposed the plan feared that the proposed incorporation was an attempt by the community's large estate owners to more tightly regulate their properties and the local beaches for themselves.[9] Accordingly, all of Centerport would remain an unincorporated hamlet within – and governed by – the Town of Huntington.[10][9] The defeat of the incorporation proposal was met with a parade and celebration by opponents.[9]

Etymology

Formerly known as Little Cow Harbor in about 1700, as Centreport by 1836, and as Centerport after 1895, the community's name refers to its geographic position along the water, midway between the east and west boundaries of the Town of Huntington.[11] The portion of the community known as Little Neck refers to its geographic location on the Little (Centerport) Neck.[11] This peninsula's name, in turn, is derived from being the smaller of two adjacent "necks" – the other being known as Great (Northport) Neck.[11]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which 2.1 square miles (5.5 km2) is land and 0.19 square miles (0.5 km2), or 8.29%, is water.[12][13]

Centerport is highly residential, characterized by winding roads and beachfront hills.[10][14][15]

Boating

As is common among the many beachfront locations on Long Island's North Shore, Centerport has developed a large boating and sailing culture.[11][22] An important part of this culture is the Centerport Yacht Club, which was founded in 1947 and has served as the social and athletic focal point for the boating community in both Centerport and its surrounding areas. The yacht club sponsors a variety of racing fleets and regattas every year generally beginning in the late spring and ending mid-autumn.[23]
