Caballeronia is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria in the family Burkholderiaceae. The type species is Caballeronia glathei.[2] Species of the genus have been isolated from environments and hosts including soil, plant tissues, fungi, and insects.[1]

Some strains have plant-associated properties. Endophytic strains of C. sordidicola and C. udeis isolated from conifers have exhibited nitrogen fixation and plant-growth-promoting activity.[3][4] C. insecticola is a gut symbiont of the bean bug Riptortus pedestris.[5]

Taxonomy

Caballeronia was established to accommodate twelve species formerly assigned to Burkholderia or Paraburkholderia that formed a distinct phylogenetic lineage.[1] Thirteen additional species were subsequently transferred from Burkholderia to Caballeronia.[6]

The generic name honours Mexican microbiologist Jesús Caballero-Mellado for his research on plant-associated bacteria.[2]

Phylogeny

The tree below was pruned from the Genome Taxonomy Database (GTDB) R11-RS232 bacterial reference tree to include only Caballeronia species with validly published and correct names recognized by LPSN.[2][7][8] Unnamed genome clusters and names without standing in nomenclature were excluded. C. eucalypticola and C. ginsengisoli were not represented in this GTDB release.
