Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens is an anaerobic species of bacterium in the family Lachnospiraceae. It is the type species of the genus Butyrivibrio.[1] Its cells are motile, curved rods that generally bear a single flagellum. Although its cell-envelope structure is Gram-positive, cultures frequently give a Gram-negative staining reaction.[2]
The type strain, D1T, was isolated from the rumen of cattle.[3] It ferments several plant-derived carbohydrates, including xylan, pectin and starch, producing hydrogen, carbon dioxide, butyrate, formate and lactate.[4]
Taxonomy
The specific epithet combines the Latin words fibra, meaning fibre, and solvens, meaning dissolving.[1]
Genome-based comparisons have revealed extensive diversity among isolates historically assigned to B. fibrisolvens and related members of Butyrivibrio and Pseudobutyrivibrio. Some strains bearing the name therefore may not belong to the same genomic species as the type strain.[5]
