Synonyms

Lysinibacillus odysseyi is a species of Gram-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium. It was originally isolated from the surface of the Mars Odyssey spacecraft during its assembly at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and described as Bacillus odysseyi in 2004.[1] The specific epithet odysseyi refers to the Mars Odyssey spacecraft. The type strain is 34hs-1T (= ATCC PTA-4993T = NRRL B-30641T = NBRC 100172T).

The spores possess an exosporium, spore coat, cortex and core and are resistant to desiccation, hydrogen peroxide, ultraviolet radiation and gamma radiation. In the original study, spores showed 100% survival following desiccation, 26% survival following hydrogen-peroxide exposure, 10% survival at an ultraviolet dose of 660 J m−2, and 0.4% survival following gamma irradiation.[1]

In 2012, the species was transferred to the genus Lysinibacillus as Lysinibacillus odysseyi on the basis of phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses.[2]
