Neobacillus fumarioli is a species of aerobic, endospore-forming bacterium. It is moderately thermophilic and acidophilic and was originally isolated from geothermal environments in northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, and Candlemas Island in the South Sandwich Islands.[1] The specific epithet fumarioli means "of a fumarole", referring to the geothermal habitat from which the species was isolated. The type strain is LMG 17489T (= DSM 18237T = JCM 21708T = NCIMB 13771T).
The species was originally described as Bacillus fumarioli in 2000 and was transferred to the genus Neobacillus in 2020 on the basis of phylogenomic and comparative genomic analyses.[2]
