The India men's national under-21 field hockey team represents India in men's under-21 field hockey competitions.[3] It is governed by Hockey India, the governing body for field hockey in India.[4] They are one of the most successful junior field hockey team in the world having won the World Cup twice and Asia Cup five times.[5][6][7][8] The team is currently ranked 4th in the world, and 1st in Asia.[9]

History

India junior team's first recorded international tournament is the inaugural 1979 Junior World Cup, where they finished 5th.[10] They managed to finish 5th in the 1982 and 1985 World Cups consecutively. In the first ever Junior Asia Cup in 1988, they settled with a third place bronze and missed the 1989 Junior World Cup spot as only finalists could qualify for the World Cup.[11] After the fourth place finish in 1992 Junior Asia Cup, they also failed to qualify for the 1993 Junior World Cup.

India won silver in the 1996 Junior Asia Cup and made a comeback to the World Cup, qualifying to the 1997 Junior World Cup. India started the 1997 World Cup with a narrow loss against Spain, but won against Netherlands, Cuba and Belgium. A draw with Australia took them to the semi-final, where they defeated Germany by 4–3 in the extra time. In their first World Cup final, against Australia, they lost by a goal margin as 2–3 and added a World Cup silver to their cabinet.[12]

In the 2000 Junior Asia Cup, India won silver and made it to the 2001 Junior World Cup. They started the tournament by winning all the group stage clashes and entered the medal round. India drew with Argentina and lost 1–2 to Australia. In a must win game against Netherlands, India overcame them in a 7 goal thriller and qualified to the final four. In the semi-final against the then 4 time champions, Germany, India won by 3–2, despite conceding two late goals after taking a 3–0 lead. In their second World Cup final, against Argentina, India made history by winning their first ever Junior World Cup with a big 6–1 victory.[13] They held the World champions and the Asian champions titles at the same time, when they won their first Junior Asia Cup in 2004, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan.[14] India started their World title defence in 2005, with topping the group stage and medal round, beating Netherlands, Spain and England. However, they lost to Australia by 2–3 in semi final and missed the bronze against Spain in penalties.[15]

They retained the Asia title in 2008, with a sudden death win over Korea in the final, as Diwakar Ram hit a golden goal through penalty corner.[16] India could not get through the group stage in the 2009 Junior World Cup, but finished as the best in the non-medal round. India participated in the inaugural 2011 Sultan of Johor Cup and finished 4th.[17] At the 2012 Junior Asia Cup, India clinched the bronze, with Akashdeep Singh scoring a golden goal against Korea.[18] India hosted the Junior World Cup for the first time in 2013. The hosts did not qualify to the medal round as they lost to the Dutch and drew Korea, finishing 10th. They became the consecutive title winners of 2013 and 2014 Sultan of Johor Cup. India won their third Asia title in 2015 Junior Asia Cup, thrashing Pakistan 6–2 in the final.[19]

India hosted the 2016 Junior World Cup, with hosts entered the quarter finals, beating England and South Africa in the group stage. In the quarter final clash against Spain, they trailed 0–1 for the most part of the game until Simranjeet Singh and Harmanpreet Singh gave 2–1 win and a place in the final four.[20] India overcame Australia in the semi final through penalties, as goalkeeper Vikas Dahiya denied two opponents' goals[21] and the hosts faced Belgium in the final. India won the Junior World Cup for the second time after 16 years, as Gurjant Singh and Simranjeet Singh helped in a 2–1 victory.[22]

They missed back to back bronze medals in the 2021 and 2023 Junior World Cups, although qualifying up to the semi-finals in both. India are the defending Junior Asian champions, having won the last 2023 and 2024 Junior Asia Cups.

India hosted the 2025 Men's FIH Hockey Junior World Cup for the third time. India finished high in the group and entered the knockout stage. The quarter final clash against Belgium went to penalties after 2–2 draw in the regulation time. Indian goal keeper Prince Deep Singh blocked Belgium's last 2 shots as India won 4–3.[23] Germany denied India's way to the final and the hosts met Argentina for the bronze medal. The South Americans were leading 2–0 at the end of the third quarter before Indians found the net four times, in the final 11 minutes to win it 4–2.[24]
