On August 14, 2026, five people were killed and one other person was critically injured during a spree shooting at three different locations in Missaukee County, Michigan, United States. The police believe that these shootings are related, and identified 39-year-old Chad Hickman as a suspect, who was found dead after a manhunt.[1][2]

Shootings

At around 11:40 a.m., Michigan State Troopers responded to a report of a 13-year-old girl being shot at a residence on South LaChance Road in Lake Township. Three other people were found shot and killed in the home, and the girl was taken to a hospital. The suspect, Chad Hickman, is believed to have also gone to another residence and shot and killed a 53-year-old man. Hickman was found dead with a 29-year-old woman near Whitlock Lake.[3]

Victims

Six people—four adults and two juveniles—were shot, five fatally. One 13-year-old girl was critically wounded. Two of the deceased were identified as 40-year-old Amanda Everitt and 16-year-old Eric Everitt.[4][5][6]

Suspect

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, a resident of Lake City and Jennings. In 2024, he was convicted of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse, and was sentenced to one year in jail. He was also charged with felony assault and sexual misconduct, but the charges were dismissed.[7]

Tim Penrose, a neighbor of Hickman, said that Hickman harassed him and his wife, and was aggressive and tried to fight him on multiple occasions.[8]

Reactions

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was briefed on the shooting, and said, "My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the Missaukee community."[9]

Lake City Area Schools district officials plan to honor one of the victims killed in the shooting, who was a student in the district.[10]
