Match
Summary
Újpest began the final brightly after an early chance for Haladás's Alex, taking control of the match and creating several opportunities. Robert Vágner was particularly active in attack, and he gave Újpest the lead in the 26th minute with a 25-metre shot that went past goalkeeper Tamás Takács. Haladás responded by improving its play after the goal, but struggled to create clear scoring opportunities before half-time. Early in the second half, Haladás made two substitutions as manager Lázár Szentes sought to strengthen his team. Újpest continued to threaten on the counter-attack, with Radek Slončík forcing a save from Takács in the 57th minute. Haladás gradually increased its pressure, although much of its possession produced few clear chances. In the 74th minute, Péter Halmosi equalised for Haladás with a left-footed shot from 18 metres following Leandro's pass. The equaliser was considered deserved as Haladás had increased its attacking pressure while Újpest had increasingly concentrated on defending. After the goal, however, and particularly during extra time, Haladás began to tire and Újpest pushed the Szombathely side back towards its own penalty area. Despite Újpest's territorial dominance in extra time, neither side initially produced a decisive scoring opportunity. Both teams had further chances late in the match, including opportunities for Tibor Tokody and Halmosi. In the final minute of extra time, Vágner scored again after Dejan Poljaković's cross, controlling the ball with his chest before shooting from close range to make it 2–1. The goal secured Újpest's victory and ensured their spot in the qualifying round of 2002–03 UEFA Cup. After the final whistle, Újpest supporters entered the pitch to celebrate with the players, while the referee ended the match with at least 500 supporters on the field.[4]
