Yoshiwa, Hiroshima

Yoshiwa (吉和村, Yoshiwa-mura) was a village located in Saeki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.[1]

On March 1, 2003, Yoshiwa, along with the town of Saeki (also from Saeki District), was merged into the expanded city of Hatsukaichi.[1][2]

Geography

Yoshiwa was situated in the northwestern mountainous region of Hiroshima Prefecture, bordering Shimane Prefecture and Yamaguchi Prefecture.[3] Approximately 94% of the village's total area was covered by dense mountain forests.[3]

History

Human settlement in the Yoshiwa area dates back over 20,000 years to the Japanese Paleolithic period, as evidenced by excavations at the Kanmuri ruin site.[3]

The modern village of Yoshiwa was established in 1889 following the implementation of the municipal system under the Meiji Restoration.[1][3] Throughout the 20th century, the local economy relied heavily on forestry, mountain agriculture, and winter sports, hosting the first Hiroshima Prefecture Ski Championship in 1934.[3]
