Volvarina cachoi is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Marginellidae, the margin snails.[1]
Description
The shell of Volvarina cachoi reaches a maximum known length of 6.8 mm.[2] It is a small, glossy, ovate to elongate-ovate shell typical of the genus Volvarina. The spire is low and partially immersed, while the body whorl occupies most of the shell length. The aperture is long and narrow, extending nearly the full height of the shell, and the outer lip is thickened internally. The columella bears several oblique folds, a characteristic feature of marginellid gastropods.[2][3]
Like other members of the family Marginellidae, V. cachoi possesses a smooth, highly polished shell with reduced external sculpture. Living animals of the species have not been described in detail in the scientific literature.[2]
Distribution
Volvarina cachoi is endemic to the Caribbean Sea and is known only from waters off Cuba, where it was originally described.[1][2] The species is a marine gastropod inhabiting shallow tropical waters, although its precise bathymetric range and habitat preferences have not been extensively documented.[1]
Ecology
Little is known about the ecology or life history of Volvarina cachoi. Like other marginellids, it is presumed to be a benthic marine species living on sandy or mixed substrates. Members of the family Marginellidae are carnivorous or scavenging gastropods that feed on small invertebrates and organic material.[3]
