Vernonia nonoensis is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is endemic to Ecuador and is known from the area around Nono, near Quito. The species is considered rare and poorly known, with the Ecuadorian Red Book reporting only a single collection made in 1930.[2]

Description

Vernonia nonoensis belongs to the family Asteraceae. Detailed information on its morphology is limited because the species is known from very few collections.[2]

The species was described by French botanist Raymond Benoist in 1936. The original description was published in the Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France.[3]

Distribution and habitat

Vernonia nonoensis is endemic to Ecuador. It is associated with high Andean forest habitat at elevations of approximately 2,000–2,500 metres.[2]

The species is known from the surroundings of Nono, a rural parish in the Metropolitan District of Quito. Despite increased botanical collecting in areas near Quito, it has not been reported again for many decades after the original collection.[2]

Conservation

Vernonia nonoensis is classified as Endangered (EN) under the IUCN Red List criteria.[1]

The Ecuadorian Red Book considers the species rare and poorly known. It reports that the species was known from a single collection made in 1930 in the vicinity of Nono and that it had not been recorded again for more than 75 years. The destruction of natural vegetation in the area was identified as a serious threat to its conservation.[2]

Because of the scarcity of records, the current distribution and population size of V. nonoensis remain poorly documented.[2]

Taxonomy

The species was described as Vernonia nonoensis by Raymond Benoist in 1936.[3]

The specific epithet nonoensis refers to the locality of Nono, Ecuador, where the species was collected.
