Tofig Ahmed-agha oglu Bakikhanov (Azerbaijani: Tofiq Əhmədağa oğlu Bakıxanov; 8 December 1930 – 23 August 2026) was an Azerbaijani composer. He was awarded the title People's Artiste of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1990.

Life and career

Tofig Bakikhanov, a descendant of Baku khans, was born in Baku on 8 December 1930,[1] in the family of Ahmed–agha Bakikhanov, a tar player and music educator, People's Artist of Azerbaijan. He grew up with a brother and a sister.[2] He studied the violin from age ten at the music school (now the Bülbül Secondary Specialised Music School) of the U. Hajibeyli Azerbaijan State Conservatoire.[1] In 1953, Bakikhanov graduated in violin from the Conservatory, where Alexander Amiton was his teacher. He majored in composition in 1957 after studies with Gara Garayev.[1][3] During his student years, he worked already as a violinist, playing at the Academy, in concert halls, and on radio.[1] In 1947 he performed Henri Vieuxtemps's Violin Concerto No. 4 at a concert at the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theatre,[2][3] celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi.[2] He became the violinist of the Azerbaijan Philharmonic Society's trio.[3]

From 1953 Bakikhanov was teacher and also head of the string department of the Zeynally Baku College of Music. From 1966 he managed the department of arts edition and from 1968, the department of note-music literature of the Azernashr publishing house. Starting in 1969, Bakikhanov performed recitals in Paris, Moscow, Tbilisi, Istanbul, İzmir and Tehran, among others.[4] In 1968, Bakikhanov's Caspian Ballade ballet was staged at the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.[3]

From 1970, Bakikhanov began to work as the senior teacher of the department of chamber music and as the dean of the performing program of the Azerbaijan Conservatory. He continued to play his works in recitals in Bulgaria, Georgia, Iran, Russia and Turkey.[1] He was a member of the national association of composers from 1958.[5]

Bakikhanov died on 23 August 2026, at the age of 95.[1]
