The Last Taxi Driver (Greek: Ο τελευταίος ταξιτζής, O teleftaios taxitzis) is a 2023 Greek psychological thriller written and directed by Stergios Paschos, his second feature. It stars Kostas Koronaios as a lonely Athens taxi driver whose fixation on a young passenger, played by Klelia Andriolatou, gradually turns predatory.[1][2][3]
The film premiered in competition at the 64th Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November 2023[2][3] and received five nominations at the 2024 Iris Awards of the Hellenic Film Academy, including Best Leading Actor for Koronaios and Best Leading Actress for Andriolatou.[4][5]
Plot
An Athens taxi driver, isolated and adrift, becomes fixated on Eleni, a young woman who is a regular fare. His initial protective attention slides into obsession and pursuit, and the film follows the deteriorating boundary between the two.[1][2]
Cast
- Kostas Koronaios as the taxi driver
- Klelia Andriolatou as Eleni
Production
The Last Taxi Driver is the second feature written and directed by Stergios Paschos, following Afterlov (2016). The project was developed with support from Greek and European film-funding programmes and was shot in Athens.[2]
Release and reception
The film premiered in competition at the 64th Thessaloniki International Film Festival on 6 November 2023.[2][3] It was subsequently programmed at international festivals and cultural venues, including a screening in the Hellenic Film Society USA series at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York in 2025.[6]
Reviewing the film in Screen International, Amber Wilkinson wrote that Paschos "builds a slow-burn portrait of masculine loneliness that turns increasingly menacing," praising the performances of the two leads.[1] David Katz, writing for Cineuropa, called it an intimate and provocative thriller anchored by its central performances.[2] A review in Variety by Ariston Anderson described the film as a study of a disappointing life going nowhere fast, noting that the tension is sustained through observational restraint rather than incident.[3]
