The Ghost Falls In Love (Spanish: El fantasma se enamora) is a 1953 Mexican fantasy comedy film directed by Rafael Portillo and written by Portillo alongside Alfredo Salazar.[1] The film features a prominent cast from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, starring Gloria Marín, Abel Salazar, and Ramón Gay.[2]

Produced by the Tucsa production house, the movie premiered theatrically in Mexico on June 26, 1953.[3] It is noted by film historians for its collaborative technical crew, showcasing cinematography by the award-winning director of photography Rosalío Solano and visual editing parameters handled by José W. Bustos.[1]

Plot

The narrative centers on a supernatural romantic comedy involving a wealthy but deeply unhappily married couple whose household dynamics completely fracture due to mutual coldness and constant marital disputes.[4] The situation changes dramatically when the husband, Carlos (Abel Salazar), suffers an untimely accident and dies, leaving his beautiful widow, Elena (Gloria Marín), completely alone to manage the sprawling family estate.[1][4]

To Carlos's immense surprise, his conscious spirit does not pass on; instead, he materializes as a fully sentient ghost bound permanently to the mansion.[4] Free from the physical constraints and material stresses of his past life, Carlos experiences a profound psychological transformation and starts viewing Elena through a completely new perspective, falling deeply and unconditionally in love with his own widow for the very first time.[4]

The situation complicates when a handsome, living suitor, Arturo (Ramón Gay), arrives at the property and attempts to aggressively court the wealthy Elena.[2] Driven by intense supernatural jealousy and a desire to protect his wife from opportunistic individuals, the ghost of Carlos utilizes his newly acquired poltergeist abilities to manipulate household objects, stage spectral illusions, and orchestrate a chaotic series of comedic, haunting encounters to sabotage Arturo's advances.[4] Through these continuous supernatural interventions and domestic errors, the ghost works tirelessly behind the scenes to win Elena's affection from beyond the grave and prove that true love can successfully bridge the gap between the living and the dead.[4]
