Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) is an Indian electronics manufacturing and semiconductor company and a subsidiary of Tata Group. Established in 2020, the company operates in electronics manufacturing services (EMS), semiconductor assembly and testing, semiconductor foundry development, and semiconductor design services.

The company has manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and is developing major semiconductor facilities in Gujarat and Assam. Its semiconductor expansion includes a planned 300 mm semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, being developed in partnership with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), and a semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam.

History

Tata Electronics was established in 2020 as a new business initiative of the Tata Group. The company initially focused on electronics manufacturing services and began construction of its manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, in 2020. The Hosur plant was completed in 2021 and subsequently became operational.[1][2]

In February 2024, the Government of India approved Tata Electronics' proposal to establish a semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad, Assam. The project was announced with an investment outlay of ₹27,000 crore.[3] In March 2024, Tata Electronics received approval for a semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera, Gujarat, and the foundation stones for the Gujarat and Assam projects were laid. The two projects were announced with a combined investment outlay of approximately ₹1.18 trillion.[4][5]

In 2024, Tata Electronics also acquired the India operations of Wistron Corporation's electronics manufacturing business. The acquired business was subsequently rebranded as Tata Electronics Systems Solutions (TESS).[6][7] In September 2024, Tata Electronics and PSMC completed an agreement concerning technology transfer for the planned Dholera semiconductor fab.[8][9]

In 2025, Tata Electronics acquired a majority stake in Pegatron Technology India Private Limited as part of the expansion of its electronics manufacturing services business. The company also entered into a number of technology and manufacturing partnerships, including agreements or memoranda of understanding involving Intel, ROHM, Robert Bosch, Merck and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).[10][11]

In May 2026, Tata Electronics and ASML announced a strategic partnership concerning the development and ramp-up of the Dholera semiconductor fabrication facility, including lithography technology, workforce training and research and development infrastructure.[12][13]

Electronics manufacturing

The company's EMS operations manufacture electronic components and products for customers. Its manufacturing footprint includes facilities in Hosur and other locations in Tamil Nadu, as well as Kolar and other locations in Karnataka.[2]

In 2024, Tata Electronics expanded its EMS business through the acquisition of Wistron's India operations. The transaction increased the company's manufacturing presence in India and was followed by the creation of Tata Electronics Systems Solutions.[6]

Semiconductors

Semiconductor assembly and testing

The company is also constructing a larger greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Assam. The project has an announced investment of ₹27,000 crore and is planned to use technologies including wire bonding, flip-chip packaging and integrated systems packaging.[3]

Semiconductor fabrication

Tata Electronics is developing a semiconductor fabrication plant at Dholera, Gujarat, in partnership with PSMC. The proposed facility is designed as a 300 mm (12-inch) fab and is planned to manufacture analog and logic integrated circuits using process technologies ranging from 28 nm to 110 nm. The planned monthly production capacity is up to 50,000 wafers. The proposed fab is intended to supply chips for applications including automotive electronics, computing and data storage, wireless communications, artificial intelligence, power management and display technologies.[14]

In May 2026, ASML and Tata Electronics announced a partnership under which ASML would support the establishment and ramp-up of the Dholera fab with lithography equipment and related solutions.[15]

Semiconductor design

Tata Electronics has also been developing semiconductor design and intellectual-property capabilities. In 2025, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with C-DAC, an organisation under India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, to explore cooperation in semiconductor design and intellectual-property development.[16][17]

Partnerships

Tata Electronics has entered into partnerships with semiconductor and technology companies as part of its expansion into semiconductor manufacturing. These include PSMC for the Dholera fab and ASML for lithography and related semiconductor-manufacturing capabilities.[18]
