Taiwan Revolutionary Alliance

The Taiwan Revolutionary Alliance (Chinese: 臺灣革命同盟會) was an organization established in Chongqing during the Second Sino-Japanese War by anti-Japan/anti-imperialist Taiwanese in the Republic of China (ROC). It was formed on February 10, 1941, through the merger of four resisting anti-Japan groups: the Federation of Taiwanese Revolutionary Groups (臺灣革命團體聯合會), the Taiwanese Revolutionary Party (臺灣革命黨), the Taiwanese Youth Revolutionary Party (臺灣青年革命黨), and the Taiwanese National Revolutionary Party (臺灣國民革命黨). The Alliance advocated overthrowing Japanese rule in Taiwan, assisting the Republic of China in taking over Taiwan, and supporting the ROC in fighting Japan. The organization published New Taiwan (新臺灣) and Taiwan Minsheng Bao (臺灣民聲報) as its official organs, and compiled the Taiwan Question Series (臺灣問題叢書).[1]
Figures such as Li Youbang, Chiu Nien-tai, Hsieh Tung-min, Li Chunqing, Song Feiru, Lee Wan-chu, Hsieh Nan-kuang, Huang Chao-chin, and Yeu Mi-chien successively served as leaders of the Alliance. The organization was divided into Northern and Southern Executive Departments: the Northern Executive Department was operated by Li Youbang's Taiwanese Volunteer Corps and headquartered in Jinhua, Zhejiang; the Southern Executive Department was led by Zhang Bangjie's Taiwanese Revolutionary Party and headquartered in Zhangzhou, Fujian. The Alliance had fewer than 1,000 members, suffered from intense internal factionalism, and clashed with the Kuomintang Taiwan provincial branch.[2][3]
Between 1941 and 1944, the Taiwan Revolutionary Alliance incited Taiwanese people to stage 12 uprisings, involving more than 1,300 participants.[2]
On January 19, 1942, Zhang Bangjie, Chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Taiwan Revolutionary Alliance, submitted the "Five Opinions on Recovering Taiwan" to the Executive Yuan of the Nationalist government, requesting that the Nationalist government declare "Taiwan as territory of the Republic of China and a province of the ROC." He also urged local governments to release detained Taiwanese residents, return properties confiscated from Taiwanese after the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and allocate funding to the Alliance. On January 24, the Nationalist government responded that asserting "Taiwan is ROC territory" involved national policy and should be temporarily shelved to avoid raising concerns among foreign nations. Regarding the detention of Taiwanese in mainland China, the government stated that Taiwanese residents should be treated differently from Japanese expatriates and suggested resolving citizenship issues by encouraging Taiwanese people to naturalize as Chinese citizens. In November 1943, amid rumors that the United Kingdom and the United States might jointly administer Taiwan after Japan's defeat, the Alliance urged the Executive Yuan to establish a "Taiwan Provincial Government." Following the issuance of the Cairo Declaration, the Alliance submitted the "Outline for the Establishment of the Preparatory Office for the Taiwan Provincial Government" to the Nationalist government. Consequently, the government directed the Three-link Administrative System to set up the Taiwan Investigation Committee to draft the "Outline for the Plan to Take Over Taiwan" and address post-war takeover plans for Taiwan.[4][5]
On October 25, 1945, following the ROC takeover of Taiwan, members of the Taiwan Revolutionary Alliance returned to Taiwan, and the organization was disbanded shortly thereafter.[2]
