Sofiia Krainska (Ukrainian: Софія Михайлівна Країнська; born 4 April 2011) is a Ukrainian rhythmic gymnast.[1] She represents Ukraine in international competitions. She is a two-time silver medalist at the 2026 European Junior Championships in the team event and the ribbon routine, and a bronze medalist at the 2026 European Cup in the clubs routine.
Career
Before entering the national team, she trained at the Deriugins School under Viktoria Bessonova, the mother and coach of Olympic medalist Anna Bessonova.[2]
In 2022, while temporarily staying in Italy, she trained at the "San Giorgio 79 Desio" club and competed in the Italian National Championship (Gold Allieve). She finished fourth nationally in the all-around event among gymnasts born in 2011 and won three silver medals in the rope, clubs, and ribbon routines.[3][4][5]
In February 2023, she moved to train with the Ukrainian national team. In November 2023, at the Ukrainian Team Championships for seniors and juniors, the team comprising Sofiia Krainska, Valeriia Stepenko, Yelyzaveta Krutova, Olha Lysenko, Yelyzaveta Zabotska, and Yaroslava Fenicheva won first place in the group all-around event for gymnasts born in 2011.[6]
In February 2024, at the Miss Valentine tournament in Tartu, Estonia, she won three gold medals in the category for gymnasts born in 2011: in the all-around, ball, and clubs routines.[7]
In November 2024, she won gold in the all-around event at the Ukrainian Cup for gymnasts born in 2011. She also won bronze in the group all-around competition as part of a team alongside Valeriia Stepenko, Yelyzaveta Krutova, Kseniia Vasylchenko, and Yelyzaveta Zabotska.[8]
Junior
In 2025, she moved up to the junior category. At the Miss Valentine tournament in Tartu, she competed in the category for gymnasts born in 2011, winning gold medals in the all-around, ball, and clubs events.[9][10]
In May 2025, she competed at the European Cup in Baku, where she placed fourth in the team event alongside Viktoriia Dorofieieva, Anna Vykhodets, and Liubov Gorashchenko, and finished fifth in the hoop routine.[11]
In September 2025, she won bronze medals in the all-around and the clubs routine at the Czech Junior Cup 2025 international tournament in Brno, Czech Republic.[12][13][14][15]
In February 2026, she participated in the Miss Valentine tournament, performing in four apparatuses and placing fifth in the clubs final.[16][17]
In April 2026, she won the bronze medal in the clubs final at the Sofia Cup international tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.[18][19][20]
The following month, she took part in the European Cup in Baku, where she placed twelfth in the ball routine, fourth in the team event, and won the bronze medal in the clubs final.[21][22][23][24]
In May 2026, she was selected to compete at the European Championships in Varna. In the junior category, she won the silver medal in the team event alongside Varvara Chubarova and Sofiia Kulikova. Additionally, she became the silver medalist in the ribbon final and placed fifth in the clubs routine.[25][26][27][28][29]
Protest at the 2026 European Championships
During the apparatus finals at the 2026 European Championships in Varna, Sofiia Krainska and her national teammate Varvara Chubarova staged separate silent protests against the reinstatement of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international sports. During the medal ceremonies on the podium, both Ukrainian gymnasts put on headphones and covered their eyes to block out the anthems of the restarting nations; Krainska reacted specifically to the Russian national anthem, while Chubarova demonstrated her refusal during the Belarusian anthem. This expression of civic position by the young Ukrainian athletes drew widespread coverage across both national and international sports media channels.[30][31]
