Sheikh Ibrahim Khaleel

Sheikh Malam Ibrahim Khaleelpronunciationⓘ is an Islamic scholar based in Kano State, Nigeria, who has expressed interest in running for governor of the state in the 2011 elections.[1]

When questioned on whether the then governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, supported Sheikh Khaleel, the Secretary of the Kano State chapter of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) said that the governor had not decided on any candidate.[2] He is currently contesting to be the governor of Kano state in the 2023 Kano state governorship election under the party of ADC. Khaleel was also the ADC's Kano State governorship candidate in the 2019 general election.[3] In the 2023 election, he was defeated by Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).[4]

2027 candidacy

Ahead of the 2027 Kano State gubernatorial election, Khaleel again sought the ADC's governorship ticket, winning the party's primary election held on 22 May 2026 with 55,851 votes against 4,000 votes for his rival aspirant, Ibrahim Ali-Amin ("Al'amin Little").[3] The party's Expanded State Interim Leadership Team endorsed Khaleel's victory, but the ADC's national leadership subsequently opted for a consensus arrangement between the two aspirants instead, citing alleged irregularities in the primary.[5] The party's Deputy National Chairman for the North-West, Naja'atu Mohammed, said Khaleel was unlikely to secure the ticket due to his public support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a claim Khaleel has not confirmed.[6]

Sheikh Khaleel is known for his simple but sometimes controversial fatwas. For example, when in 2005 most teachers condemned a woman who led a prayer in the US, Sheikh Khaleel said there was nothing wrong about this. In 2006, he was quoted as saying that he was against the idea of Islamic preachers venturing into politics.[1]

He has said that divorce is a consequence of disobeying the rules guiding Muslim marriage, or acting contrary to the Islamic teachings.[2] He has challenged the public over the gross neglect and abuse of the rights of women in the Muslim family.[3] He has also said that businessmen should always have the fear of God in whatever they do, and is in favor of price controls rather than allowing market forces to determine prices.[4]

On 24 November 2007 Sheikh Ibrahim Khaleel became chairman of the Kano branch of the Nigeria Council of Ulama, an organization of Muslim religious leaders.[5]
