Samuel Adeleye Adenle I (1903–1976) was a Nigerian monarch. He was the 19th Ataoja (King) of Osogbo the ancient city of Osogbo the state capital of Osun.[1]
Early life
Oba Samuel was born January 1903 and was crowned as the 19th Ataoja of Osogbo on April 4, 1944, and reigned till he demised in 1976. He was married to Mrs Deborah Adedoyin and blessed with children[2][3]
Reign
Adenle became the 19th Ataoja of Osogbo in 1944. During the 1950s, he welcomed the Austrian artist and Yoruba priestess Susanne Wenger to Osogbo, giving her a house on Ibokun Road, and later gave her the Yoruba title "Iwinfunmi Adunni Olorisa" in recognition of her involvement in Osun devotion and local festivals.[4][5]
With Adenle's support, Wenger worked to restore the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, and he pushed for the grove's declaration as a Nigerian national monument in 1965.[6] The grove was later inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, nearly three decades after Adenle's death, in recognition of the collaboration between Wenger and the local community that he had originally sanctioned.[6]
