Russell Memorial C.M.E. Church is a Christian Methodist Episcopal church in Durham, North Carolina. It is located within the Hayti District.
History
Russell Memorial C.M.E. Church was founded in 1902, with the congregation first meeting at the home of Thomas Stroud on Chapel Hill Street with Joseph S. Miller serving as the pastor.[1] A church building, called King Chapel, was constructed shortly thereafter.[1]
In the 1930s, the congregation expanded. A brick structure was built on Matthew Street, at which time the congregation was renamed St. Matthew C.M.C. Church.[1] The church caught fire on December 11, 1949 and burned down.[1] A new church was opened for worship at 703 Alston Avenue on December 13, 1953, under the name Russell Memorial C.M.E. Church.[1][2]
