Renaissance Philanthropy is a philanthropic organization headquartered in New York City.[1] Its stated goal is to support scientific research and technological innovation. Its name is related to its aim "to fuel a twenty-first-century renaissance by increasing the ambition of philanthropists, scientists and innovators”.[2]

The organization was co-founded in 2024 by Kumar Garg and Tom Kalil, former science and technology policy advisors under the Clinton and Obama administrations.[2] As of 2026, the organization had mobilized over US$500 million for philanthropy.[3][4]

Funds

Renaissance Philanthropy organizes part of their activities around "thesis-driven funds," designed to "enable donors to leverage field experts without building large teams." The thesis-driven fund strategy is said to have three pilars:[5]

  • A clear set of goals, with a time frame, and description of the capital required ("compelling thesis);
  • An expert individual able to drive the set of goals, with connections to both donors and potential grantees ("field leader"), and;
  • An initial donor providing at least 20% of the overall goal ("anchor donor").

In May 2026, it launched the Open Source for Science Fund, in the support of open-source software used in research. The fund was seeded with a $20 million grant by Biohub and the Wellcome Trust. The inaugural funding call was called "Open Source for the Life Sciences" with two funding tracks, with grants of up to 250 thousand and $1 million in each.[6][7] The fund, initially focused on the life sciences, was designed as a continuation of the Essential Open Source Software for Science (EOSS) series run by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which awarded $58 million to 230 open-source software projects over six years.[7]

Other funds by Renaissance Philanthropy include the Advanced Research for Climate Emergencies Fund, the Africa Jobs Fund, the Public Benefit Innovation Fund, the Arctic Stabilization Initiative, the Housing Abundance Philanthropy Fund, the AI for Math Fund, the Chimaera Fund, and the UK Dynamism Fund, in the fields of climate science and sustainable energy, labor mobility, public benefit innovation, housing, research in mathematics, artificial intelligence, and biology, and national development.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
