Radio Dreyeckland

Radio Dreyeckland refers to two radio stations with a common history: free public radio Radio Dreyeckland in Freiburg, Germany and private music station DKL Dreyeckland (former also radio Dreyeckland) based in Mulhouse, Alsace, France.

Both stations are successors to Radio Verte Fessenheim which was started by opponents to the Fessenheim Nuclear Power Plant during the 1970s and was renamed 'Dreyeckland' in 1981. Dreyeckland refers to the cross-border region at the tripoint of Germany, France and Switzerland near Basel.

History

Dreyeckland cross-border region at the tripoint of Germany, France and Switzerland near Basel

In the late 1970s, a cross-border occupation of a site took place in Marckolsheim, Alsace, to protest against nuclear power plants in the Upper Rhine region. Initiatives from Switzerland, Germany, and France were involved. As part of the protest a FM transmitter was established and mounted on a mast belonging to the French electric utility company. Radio Verte Fessenheim, the pirate radio station started in 1977. The driving force was a sense of being underrepresented in the media. "People felt that neither they nor the dangers of nuclear power were receiving adequate public attention. Alongside leaflets, radio served as a means to address this." Radio Dreyeckland vetran and later CEO Andreas Reimann said. He adds that the name Dreyeckland was born partly of the experience of the world wars, and the idea, that borders should no longer matter.[1]

During the eighties and early nineties people from Switzerland were cooperating with the French Dreyeckland running broadcasts aimed at listeners in Basel and its surroundings using the transmitter in France, because they didn't have a license for Switzerland.

The German Dreyeckland station started in 1985 as a pirate station. In 1988 the station git an licence. Radio Dreyeckland Freiburg was runed as a own station but in the same spirit as the one from Alsace.

While radio Dreyeckland from southern Alsace developed into a commercial oldies radio during the 90thies, the German Dreyeckland is still a free radio station.
