Puntigrus pulcher is a small species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is endemic to eastern Indonesian Borneo, where it is known from the Kayan and Mahakam drainage basins.[2] The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed the species as Least Concern.[1]
Taxonomy
The species was described by Swedish zoologist Hialmar Rendahl in 1922 as Puntius pulcher. Its type locality is the Kayan River near Bulungan in northeastern Borneo. The holotype is held by the Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo under catalogue number ZMUO J5309.[2]
P. pulcher was subsequently treated as a synonym of other tiger barbs, including Puntius anchisporus and P. tetrazona. Maurice Kottelat and Tan Heok Hui revalidated it as a distinct species in 2011 and placed it in the genus Systomus.[3] In 2013, Kottelat established the genus Puntigrus for the tiger barbs and assigned the species its current combination, Puntigrus pulcher.[4]
Description
Like other members of Puntigrus, the species has a pale body crossed by four dark vertical bars. The first passes through the eye, the second is situated in front of the pelvic-fin base, the third lies above the anal fin and continues onto it, and the fourth is at the base of the caudal fin. At least the basal half of the dorsal fin is black.[4]
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.7 cm (1.1 in) for the species.[5]
Distribution and ecology
Puntigrus pulcher is restricted to Indonesian Borneo. Confirmed records are from the Kayan and Mahakam river systems in the eastern part of the island.[2] It is a tropical, freshwater benthopelagic fish.[5]
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Puntigrus pulcher as Least Concern in 2020.[1]
