Probarbus labeamajor, commonly known as the thicklip barb or thicklipped barb, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Cyprinidae native to Thailand.[2] The species was described by Tyson R. Roberts in 1992 from the Mekong River near Khong Chiam.[3]
Description
Probarbus labeamajor is distinguished from other species of Probarbus by its relatively large lips, smaller and more numerous scales, and six stripes on the body above the lateral line. Its barbels are reduced in length and may be absent. The posterior margin of the lower lip is free from side to side. The species has 13 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays, with 40–41 vertebrae. It reaches a length of approximately 150 cm and a weight of 70 kg.[2]
Distribution and habitat
The thicklip barb is endemic to the Mekong River basin in mainland Southeast Asia. It has been recorded from the Mekong and associated waters in Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia.[3][2] It is a freshwater, benthopelagic and potamodromous species inhabiting tropical river environments. Its distribution is closely associated with the Mekong basin and its major river habitats.[2]
Conservation
The species is classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under the IUCN 3.1 assessment system.[1] It has experienced population declines within the Mekong basin. Large individuals had become uncommon in parts of the Mekong and the species was only rarely encountered at some surveyed locations.[4] The species has also been identified as an important fisheries species in the Mekong basin, where fishing pressure has contributed to long-term population declines.[4]
