Portland Parish, New Brunswick
Portland Parish was a geographic parish in Saint John County, New Brunswick, Canada, until 1889.
History
Portland Parish originally contained all lands between Saint John and Saint Martins Parish. The eastern part of the parish was erected as Simonds Parish in 1839. The parish was incorporated as a town in 1871, promoted to a city in 1883, and amalgamated with Saint John in 1889.[1]
Development and amalgamation
Portland Parish had a significant historical presence in the Saint John region during the nineteenth century. Initially, Portland Parish stretched towards Saint Martins from Saint John; however, it was later cut down in 1839, whereby the eastern part of it was carved out to form Simonds Parish. The remaining part of Portland continued its growth as a municipality with some legislation related to its infrastructure in terms of roads, wharves, and firefighting. In 1889, Portland Parish became part of Saint John city, thus ceasing to be a distinct municipality. This act also altered the boundary of Simonds Parish, and thus there was need for legislation that would correct the boundary between Simonds Parish and Saint John.[2]
