Phiala ochriventris is a species of moth in the family Eupterotidae. It was described by the German entomologist Embrik Strand in 1911.[1]
Description
The original description was published in 1911 under the combination Phiala (Stibolepis) ochriventris. Strand described the species from a single specimen and noted that the specimen was not in perfect condition, meaning that some of the markings might have been more distinct in freshly emerged individuals.[1]
Strand reported a wingspan of approximately 55 mm, with the forewing measuring about 28 mm and the body approximately 22 mm in length.[1]
According to the original description, the underside of both wings was dirty greyish white, with an ochre-yellowish suffusion along the costa and marginal line. The thorax was described as greyish white in the middle and posteriorly, with an ochre-grey coloration towards the front, while the remaining body was described as a vivid ochre-yellow. The antennae were described as light brown.[1]
The original description also noted a longitudinal series of black spots formed by small markings along the sides of the abdomen. The forewings showed several transverse lines and markings, although some of these features were described as indistinct in the available specimen.[1]
Taxonomy
Strand described the species in 1911 as Phiala (Stibolepis) ochriventris.[1]
The species is currently treated as a member of the genus Phiala in the family Eupterotidae. The genus includes numerous African species and has historically undergone changes in its taxonomic arrangement.[2]
Distribution
Phiala ochriventris has been recorded from Cameroon in Central Africa.[2]
The available sources consulted for this article do not provide sufficient information to establish a more detailed modern distribution, population status, habitat preference or life history for the species.
Biology and ecology
Little published information is readily available concerning the biology, larval host plants, adult feeding behaviour or reproduction of Phiala ochriventris. The original 1911 description was primarily taxonomic and based on morphological characters of the available specimen.[1]
Because of the limited published information, the species' ecology and conservation status remain poorly documented in the sources currently cited.
