Perfect World (Chinese: 完美世界; pinyin: Wánměi Shìjiè) is a Chinese xuanhuan and xianxia web novel written by Chen Dong. It was serialized on Qidian beginning in August 2013 and concluded with its 2,014th chapter in 2016.[1][5] It is the second installment in Chen Dong's Shrouding the Heavens trilogy, following Shrouding the Heavens and preceding The Sacred Ruins.[6][7]
The story follows Shi Hao, a gifted boy who grows up in the Great Wilderness and Stone Village. After losing his original Supreme Bone, he begins a long cultivation journey that eventually expands from village and clan conflicts into struggles involving multiple realms, ancient powers and the origin of a great darkness.[8]
An animated television adaptation premiered on Tencent Video in April 2021. The series is produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and animated by Fuxi Film.
Plot
The novel begins with Shi Hao's childhood in Stone Village. Born with the Supreme Bone, he becomes the victim of a family conflict in which the bone is removed and transplanted into Shi Yi. Shi Hao survives and is raised in Stone Village, where his early life in the Great Wilderness becomes the foundation of his cultivation journey.
The Great Wilderness is populated by human settlements, powerful beasts, ancient bloodlines and supernatural beings. Shi Hao's encounters with the Willow God, ancient creatures and rival groups introduce the novel's cultivation system and establish the importance of inherited abilities, physical refinement and supernatural techniques.
As Shi Hao becomes stronger, he leaves the Great Wilderness and enters increasingly advanced cultivation environments. His journey brings him into contact with institutions, ancient inheritances and powerful cultivators, while conflicts gradually expand from personal rivalries to struggles involving entire realms.
The later narrative concerns the upper realms, the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, the Sea of Boundaries and the historical origin of the darkness threatening the fictional universe. The final volume describes Shi Hao's efforts to protect the Heavenly Court and the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths before entering the Sea of Boundaries in search of the source of the darkness.
Setting
The fictional world of Perfect World is structured around cultivation, supernatural techniques, ancient inheritances, clans, sects and multiple realms. The early story is set in the Great Wilderness, where Stone Village provides Shi Hao with his childhood home.[8]
The setting expands progressively through locations such as the Void God Realm, the Hundred Broken Mountains, ancient academies, the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, and the Sea of Boundaries.
The cultivation system emphasizes physical refinement, supernatural abilities, inherited techniques and increasingly powerful realms. Individual advancement is repeatedly connected to wider historical conflicts and the survival of entire civilizations.
The setting also incorporates motifs associated with Chinese mythology and traditional fantasy. In a 2018 report on Tencent Video's animation programming, Perfect World was presented as a work that drew on classical Chinese mythology and traditional cultural elements.[9]

Creation
Background
Perfect World was written by Chen Dong, a Chinese online-fiction writer whose works are primarily associated with xuanhuan and fantasy fiction. Before Perfect World, he had published works including Undying and Immortal, Tomb of Fallen Gods, The World of Immortals and Shrouding the Heavens. Contemporary Chinese literary coverage identified Perfect World as one of his major works.[1][7]
Chen Dong began writing online fiction in 2004 and subsequently became a professional web novelist. A 2015 China Writers Network interview stated that he had joined the China Writers Association in 2013.[10]
Writing and serialization
Perfect World began serialization on Qidian Chinese on 16 August 2013. A China Writers Network review published in January 2014 identified the work as an Eastern-fantasy (东方玄幻) novel and noted its rapid popularity following publication.[1]
Qidian later classified the completed novel as an Eastern-fantasy work and identified Shi Hao as its protagonist.[11]
The official Qidian honor page records several milestones from the novel's serialization. These including its entry into Qidian's Premium Channel, the "2013 King of Xuanhuan and Fantasy" distinction, a first-place monthly-ticket ranking, reader recommendation achievements, book-review activity rankings, and other platform badges.[12]
The same official record shows that the novel accumulated five million recommendation votes by May 2016. It also records several high rankings during 2016, including fifth place in the July monthly-ticket ranking, second place in the July reader-recommendation ranking and first place in the July book-review activity ranking.[12]
The novel concluded with chapter 2014, "独断万古(大结局)".[5]
Narrative conception
The narrative begins with a young boy emerging from the Great Wilderness. The China Writers Network's bibliographic description emphasizes Shi Hao's childhood in Stone Village and the way his early encounters with ancient creatures, sacred objects and competing groups establish the foundation for the larger story.[8]
The narrative therefore combines a coming-of-age structure with cultivation fantasy. Shi Hao's personal development remains the central thread even as the geographical and historical scope of the story expands.
The final volume reframes the protagonist's personal journey within a much larger historical conflict. Shi Hao establishes and protects the Heavenly Court before travelling into the Sea of Boundaries to confront the source of the darkness.[13]
Genre and influences
Perfect World is generally categorized as xuanhuan or Eastern fantasy rather than historical fantasy. Contemporary Chinese literary commentary explicitly described the work as an Eastern-fantasy novel.[1]
The work uses conventions associated with Chinese cultivation fiction, including progressive cultivation realms, supernatural abilities, ancient inheritances, powerful clans, sects, legendary creatures and large-scale conflicts.
It combines these conventions with a coming-of-age narrative centered on Shi Hao and with an increasingly elaborate cosmology.
Early reception during serialization
The novel attracted attention from Chen Dong's existing readership soon after its announcement and publication. China Writers Network reported that it rapidly appeared near the top of major online-literature rankings.[1]
A later 2014 China Writers Network review described Perfect World as a highly popular ongoing xuanhuan work and stated that it had reached the top of the mobile Baidu popularity chart and Baidu comprehensive index during the second half of 2014, while also occupying the leading position in UC Browser's Shenma search ranking.[14]
Qidian's official historical honor record provides additional evidence of sustained platform engagement through monthly-ticket, recommendation and book-review rankings.[12]
Development as an intellectual property
The rise of Perfect World coincided with the expansion of Chinese web fiction into a broader intellectual-property industry involving books, games, animation and other media.
A 2015 China Writers Network report on developments in online literature identified Perfect World among works being adapted into mobile games during the expansion of the online-literature copyright economy.[15]
Contemporary industry commentary described this transition as a move toward an IP-oriented model in which successful web novels could support adaptations across games, animation, film and other media.[16]
Print publication
Physical editions of Perfect World were published by Shandong Pictorial Publishing House. Bibliographic records for individual volumes identify the publisher and publication dates.[17]
Volume 14 was published in November 2016, while later volumes continued to appear in print editions.[17]
Volume 31, identified as the final printed volume, was published in June 2023 by Shandong Pictorial Publishing House.[13]
The publication history demonstrates that the work continued to exist as a physical book series after the conclusion of its original web serialization.
Authorial position
By the time Perfect World began serialization, Chen Dong had already established himself as a prominent online-fiction author. His 2015 China Writers Network interview described his development from an early online writer into a professional web novelist.[10]
Contemporary bibliographic descriptions also identify Chen Dong as a Qidian platinum-level author and a member of the China Writers Association.[17]
Legacy of the creation period
The creation and serialization of Perfect World occurred during a period of rapid expansion in Chinese online literature. The industry's movement toward adaptation and IP development provided a commercial environment in which popular web novels could be transformed into games, animation and other derivative works.[16][15]
Within that environment, Perfect World combined an established author, a large-scale fantasy world and a long-running serialized narrative.
Themes
The novel explores growth, survival, power, identity and the relationship between individual ability and historical forces.
A recurring theme is the transformation of a vulnerable child into an exceptionally powerful cultivator. Shi Hao's loss of the Supreme Bone creates an early conflict between inherited power and personal development.[8]
The novel also emphasizes family, friendship and loyalty. Stone Village remains an important emotional reference point for Shi Hao even after his journey expands across multiple realms.
Another major theme is the tension between individual cultivation and collective survival. As the story progresses, conflicts increasingly concern entire realms and civilizations rather than individual rivalries.
The later narrative also explores mortality, historical memory and the possibility of overcoming the limitations imposed by previous generations.
Reception
Literary and cultural reception
Perfect World became one of Chen Dong's best-known works during its serialization. Qidian's author profile identifies Chen Dong as a major online-literature author and lists Perfect World among his principal works.[7]
The China Writers Network's 2014 annual online-literature review selected Perfect World as its "年度最佳作品" ("Best Work of the Year"). The assessment considered overall quality, plot execution, innovation, commercial value and artistic value.[14]
The same review described the novel as a highly popular xuanhuan work and highlighted its large-scale world-building and strong performance on several popularity indices.[14]
Reader reception
Reader ratings for individual print volumes vary considerably.
Volume 14 has a Douban rating of 5.2 based on 112 ratings.[17]
Volume 16 has a rating of 6.0 based on 134 ratings.[18]
Volume 20 has a rating of 4.8 based on 88 ratings.[19]
The final printed volume, Volume 31, has a recorded rating of 7.2 based on 14 ratings.[13]
These figures represent ratings for individual print volumes and should not be treated as a single authoritative rating for the complete novel.
IP recognition
In 2016, Perfect World was included in the Top 10 of the China IP Value List's online-literature category at the China Pan-Entertainment Index Festival.[20]
In 2017, Perfect World was ranked No. 45 on the Mopian–Hurun Original Literature IP Value List, with a reported score of 67,411.[21]
The Hurun ranking was an IP-value assessment rather than a literary award, and therefore provides evidence of the property's perceived commercial and adaptation value rather than a direct judgment of literary quality.[21]
Adaptations
Manga
Perfect World has been adapted into manga and related derivative media. Commercial catalogues document manga editions based on the property.[22]
Game adaptation
The property was also developed as a video-game IP. Contemporary reporting in 2016 described a Perfect World game project associated with Chen Dong and the novel's popularity.[23]
A later People's Daily report noted that the Perfect World mobile game received a publication licence in 2019 and was subsequently released by Tencent. The report stated that the game attracted more than 2.6 million new users during its first twelve hours.[24]
Donghua
Tencent Video announced an donghua adaptation of Perfect World in 2018 as part of its Chinese animation programming. People's Daily reported that the project was presented as an adaptation drawing on traditional Chinese cultural elements and the story of Shi Hao's growth from a young boy into a powerful cultivator.[25]
The animated series was produced by Fuxi Film and Yi'en Animation, with Tencent Penguin Pictures as the producing company. The production was directed by Wang Chengguo and Zhang Shuai. The series is adapted from Chen Dong's original web novel and follows Shi Hao's cultivation journey and his development from childhood into a major figure in the fictional world.[26]
The first season began broadcasting exclusively on Tencent Video on 23 April 2021 and consisted of 26 episodes. The series was subsequently expanded into a continuing long-form production rather than being limited to a single season. Contemporary production records identify Fuxi Film as the principal animation studio and Tencent Video as the distribution platform.[26]
The series continued with additional seasons as the story progressed through later portions of the novel. Its format subsequently developed into a regular long-running online animation, with episodes released on Tencent Video on a continuing basis. Tencent Video's international animation channel also describes Perfect World as an adaptation of Chen Dong's novel and distributes promotional material and episodes for international audiences.[27]
The international distribution of the series has continued alongside its Chinese release. Tencent Video Animation's official international channel identifies the work as Perfect World and describes it as an animated adaptation of the novel. The channel has released English-language promotional material and episode trailers and has continued to publish new material as the series progressed.[27]
The production has also expanded beyond the regular episodic format through special episodes and theatrical productions. These projects have allowed individual events and characters from the source novel to receive longer-form adaptations outside the standard weekly episodes. The expansion into specials subsequently led to the production of a theatrical-length animated project, Perfect World: Ashes of Fire, released in 2024.
The adaptation's continued production has been documented by Chinese broadcasting authorities. National Radio and Television Administration records for January–March 2025 list two separate six-episode installments of Perfect World Season 5: Breakthrough (突出重围) and Nine Heavens and Ten Earths (九天十地). Both were classified as online animated productions and were submitted by Shanghai Tencent Penguin Pictures Culture Communication Co., Ltd.[28]
The licensing records show that the fifth season was formally divided into multiple licensed installments rather than being registered as a single undivided production. The two six-episode installments documented by the National Radio and Television Administration therefore account for 12 licensed episodes under these two Season 5 entries.[28]
The series continued to be released after the fifth-season licensing records. In 2026, Tencent Video Animation continued to publish new episodes and trailers through its official international channel. A March 2026 trailer identified the series as an adaptation of Chen Dong's novel and announced weekly Friday releases for new episodes.[29]
In 2025, Tencent also announced a second theatrical production based on the animated property, titled Perfect World: Nine Tribulations Burning the Heavens (完美世界第二部剧场版:九劫焚天). The announcement identified Tencent Video as the producer and distributor and Fuxi Film as the animation production company, demonstrating the expansion of the adaptation into a continuing theatrical series in addition to its regular online episodes.[30]
By 2026, the animated adaptation had therefore developed from the original 2021 seasonal production into a long-running Tencent Video series with hundreds of episodes, multiple licensed installments, special episodes and theatrical productions. The continued release of new episodes and the commissioning of additional theatrical projects have extended the adaptation well beyond the initial 2018 announcement and 2021 debut.[28][29][30]
Donghua reception
The donghua adaptation of Perfect World has achieved several measurable audience and platform milestones since its debut in 2021. It became the first Chinese animation on Tencent Video to announce a transition from a seasonal format to a year-round series. The series subsequently became the first animation on Tencent Video to surpass 10 million discussion interactions and 100 million bullet-screen comments (弹幕). Contemporary industry coverage attributed these milestones to the series' sustained audience engagement and its position within the development of the Chinese animation market.[31]
The series has also recorded high engagement for individual episodes and special installments. In December 2023, the special episode War King's Sorrow reached a reported Tencent Video popularity value of 23,285. It ranked first in Tencent Video's xuanhuan, Chinese animation and 3D animation categories, while its bullet-screen comments exceeded 100,000 within seven hours of release. These figures were reported in contemporary tracking of the episode's platform performance.[32]
The series' first theatrical special, Perfect World: Ashes of Fire, produced additional platform records. Before its release on Tencent Video on 14 September 2024, the special received more than 2.8 million advance reservations. It exceeded a Tencent Video popularity value of 20,000 within 25 minutes of release, which contemporary reporting described as the fastest such achievement among animated IPs released in 2024.[33]
The same milestone was reported by Xinmin Evening News, which described Ashes of Fire as the first production in Tencent Video's year-round animation lineup to receive a theatrical special. The report stated that the special had accumulated more than 2.8 million reservations before release and reached the 20,000 popularity threshold in 25 minutes.[34]
The theatrical special was presented in industry coverage as an extension of the animated series' long-running production model. Prior to the theatrical release, the production had introduced separate special episodes with longer runtimes and stories focusing on major events from the source novel. The development of these specials and the subsequent theatrical production represented an expansion of the adaptation beyond its regular weekly format.[31][34]
The available platform records therefore document substantial audience engagement with the animated adaptation, including more than 10 million discussion interactions, more than 100 million bullet-screen comments, high popularity rankings for individual special episodes, and more than 2.8 million advance reservations for the first theatrical special.[31][32][33]

Qidian achievements
Qidian's official honor page records the novel's early platform achievements in detail. The record includes its entry into the Premium Channel and its receipt of the "2013 King of Xuanhuan and Fantasy" distinction, a first-place monthly-ticket achievement, multiple reader-recommendation and book-review rankings, and a series of reader-engagement badges.[12]
The Qidian record also documents the novel's later popularity. By May 2016 it had accumulated five million recommendation votes, and it continued to appear near the top of monthly-ticket, recommendation and book-review rankings during the final stages of serialization.[12]
These achievements are platform-based popularity indicators rather than independently administered literary prizes.
Literary recognition
The China Writers Network's 2014 annual assessment selected Perfect World as its "Best Work of the Year." The evaluation considered the work's overall quality, plot execution, innovation, commercial value and artistic value.[14]
Bibliographic descriptions of the printed editions also record that Chen Dong received the 2014 Chinese Online Literature Annual Good Work recognition for Perfect World in 2015.[17]
Industry and IP rankings
The 2016 China Pan-Entertainment Index Festival included Perfect World in the Top 10 of its China IP Value List's online-literature category.[20]
The following year, the Mopian–Hurun Original Literature IP Value List ranked Perfect World No. 45, with a reported score of 67,411.[21]
These rankings concern IP value and industry significance rather than literary quality.
Cultural and commercial significance
Perfect World became one of Chen Dong's major works and developed beyond its original web-novel format into a wider IP encompassing print editions, manga, games and animation.[7][22][24]
Its inclusion in the 2016 China IP Value List and the 2017 Mopian–Hurun ranking provides evidence that the work had acquired significant recognition as a Chinese literary IP during the mid-2010s.[20][21]
The continuing animation adaptation further demonstrates the longevity of the property. Later regulatory records document additional online animated installments.[28]
The novel's commercial significance should nevertheless be distinguished from literary evaluation: rankings, adaptation activity and platform popularity measure different aspects of the work's reception and value.
Relationship to other works
Perfect World is commonly associated with Chen Dong's connected body of fantasy works, particularly Shrouding the Heavens and The Sacred Ruins. Qidian's author biography identifies these works among Chen Dong's major novels.[7]
The three novels are commonly treated as a connected sequence, with Perfect World set in an earlier period of the shared fictional chronology than Shrouding the Heavens and The Sacred Ruins. Perfect World follows Shi Hao, Shrouding the Heavens follows Ye Fan, and The Sacred Ruins follows Chu Feng. The three works consequently form a chronological sequence within Chen Dong's broader fictional setting, while each novel has its own protagonist and primary narrative period.[7][39]
