Patty Is Such a Girly Name (Greek: Πολύ κοριτσίστικο όνομα το Πάττυ, Poly koritsistiko onoma to Patty) is a 2025 Greek coming-of-age drama written and directed by Giorgos Georgopoulos. It is his third narrative feature. The film stars Mort Klonaraki as Daphne "Patty" Patiri, a young judo athlete from a remote Greek island who moves to Athens to train for the Olympic Games, alongside Vangelis Mourikis as her coach Yuri.[1][2] Patty Is Such a Girly Name premiered at the 65th Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November 2025, where it won five awards, and swept the 2026 Iris Awards of the Hellenic Film Academy with seven wins, including Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.[3][4][5]

Plot

Daphne Patiri, an eighteen-year-old judo athlete from a remote Greek island, follows her sensei Yuri to Athens to pursue her Olympic dream. The film traces her transition from the freedom of adolescence into the harder realities of adult life, exploring her relationships with Yuri, her family, and the women she meets in the city, against a backdrop of an Athens rarely shown onscreen — industrial docks, gyms, and working-class neighbourhoods.[1][2]

Release and reception

Patty Is Such a Girly Name had its world premiere at the 65th Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November 2025, where it won five awards.[3] It received a theatrical release in Greece on 26 February 2026.[2][3]

In a review for Eye for Film, Edin Custo described the film as a coming-of-age drama that draws its title from the Icarus myth. Custo praised its "naturalistic palette and unfussy camerawork," which he wrote "reveal an Athens rarely shown onscreen: industrial docks, damp gyms, apartments shaded by cranes rather than olive trees. A city that refuses mythic postcard romance." Custo characterised the film as sincere in its attempt to be several kinds of film at once, and identified Georgopoulos's handling of the Athens setting as its strongest element.[1] Athinorama promoted the film as "perhaps the best Greek film of 2026" ahead of its theatrical release.[2]
