Omo-Oba Adereti Sijuwade (also spelled Sijuade; 1895 – 11 May 1949) was a Nigerian prince of the House of Sijuwade (a branch of the Ogboru ruling house of Ile-Ife) and a prominent cocoa merchant. He was the son of Adelekan Olubuse I, the 46th Ooni of Ife, and the father of Okunade Sijuwade (who reigned as Olubuse II, the 50th Ooni of Ife from 1980 to 2015).[1][2][3]

Business activities

Adereti Sijuwade was a successful cocoa merchant. He operated a thriving business in the Iju, Alagbado and Abeokuta areas of what is now Ogun State. According to contemporary accounts of his son’s life, he later relocated the business to Ile-Ife (around 1947).[2][1]

His commercial success provided the foundation for the education and early career of his son Okunade, who worked in the family business for several years before pursuing further opportunities in Lagos, Ibadan and the United Kingdom.[3]

Family and legacy

As a son of Ooni Adelekan Olubuse I, Adereti held the title Omo-Oba (prince). He belonged to the House of Sijuwade within the Ogboru ruling house of Ile-Ife. His son Okunade Sijuwade later became one of the most prominent traditional rulers in modern Nigerian history, serving as Ooni for 35 years and building a significant business empire (the Sijuwade Group) in construction, hospitality and other sectors.[4]
