Oak Hall School is a private pre-K-through-12th grade school in Gainesville, Florida, founded in 1970.

History

Oak Hall was founded in 1970, the year Gainesville finished desegregating its high schools.[1] Founded by Billy Brashear and Harry L. Walker, the school was open to all "without regard to race, creed or color". But it charged annual tuition—$1,100 ($6,800 today)—a signifier of segregation academies, as noted by journalist H. G. Davis Jr. in a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of editorials.[2] By January 1971, the school received IRS approval of its tax exemption because it announced and publicized a racially nondiscriminatory admissions policy.[3]

Although technically a private school, the school was largely built with funds provided by industrial revenue bonds raised by Alachua County.[4] Oak Hall's elementary school, or "Lower School", was originally a separate campus by the name of Martha Manson Academy. The headmaster there gave the school to Oak Hall in 2001, creating the Pre-K through 12 campus that the school has today.

The school established a sister-school relationship with the Changzhou #2 Middle/High School in China.

Facilities

The school is sited on a 44-acre (18 ha) campus and includes a 400-seat theater, art and photography center, media center, science labs, gymnasium, lighted soccer field, lighted football field, unlighted tennis courts, an unlighted baseball field, a softball field, and beginnings of construction of two new gyms.

There are three schools included on the campus. Lower School (grades pre-kindergarten-5), Middle School (grades 6-8), and Upper School (grades 9-12).

Academics

One of the top private schools in the Gainesville Metropolitan Area, Oak Hall is a college preparatory academy focused on building leaders and advancing academics through STEM based programs.[5]

The Lower School curriculum is focused on the introduction and exploration of new concepts and skills and is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the core subjects paired with daily participation in special area classes such as music, art, and language classes.[6] The Middle School builds on those principles and introduces more advanced mathematical and scientific courses along with the introduction of students organizations such as clubs and athletics.

For the Upper School, the Distinguished Scholar Program provides a personalized pathway designated for students who have applied and are invited to concentrate their studies in one of three areas: Arts Conservatory, Global Affairs, or Integrated Science.

An academic highlight of the 2025–26 school year was Oak Hall School’s designation to the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll at the Platinum Level—the highest tier of distinction achievable.

Arts and extracurricular activities

The school runs an Arts Conservatory Program (ACP) that is an advanced track program that allows students to concentrate in performing arts, music, or visual arts. ACP is designed to enhance students’ problem-solving skills, global/cultural awareness, and critical thinking abilities through intensive creative study. [7]

Oak Hall has a Spanish program and was placed first in Division 1A at the Florida State Spanish Conference in 2010. It also has a Latin program and was placed first in the Senior Division and first in the Junior Division at the 2010 FJCL State Forum held between April 14, 2010, and April 17, 2010. The Senior Division won again in 2012, 2014.[8] 2015,[9] and 2016.[10] Its Certamen team has won state and collegiate-level tournaments.[11] In addition the school also offers a Chinese language program that competes yearly at the Florida Statewide Chinese Competition.

There are dozens of clubs in both the Middle and Upper Schools, clubs and organizations such as Model UN, National Honor Society, Robotics Club, Honor Council, Key Club, American Sign Language, Mu Alpha Theta, Global Affairs, Youth in Government, ceramics, etc.[12]

Athletics

The school sponsors 14 sports across both girls and boys sports. Football, baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, tennis, softball, swimming and diving, cross country, track and field, cheerleading, and weightlifting. Facilities include the Oxborough Gymnasium, Roger Maris Field — named after Roger Maris, Olinger Family Track, and Athletic Stadium.[13]
