The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is a United States nonprofit membership organisation representing volunteer fire, emergency medical services (EMS), and rescue services. Established in 1976, it advocates for volunteer emergency services at the federal level and provides resources, programs, and training.
History
The NVFC was established in March 1976 as a national organisation representing the interests of volunteer fire and emergency services. Its formation followed efforts to establish a national body representing volunteer responders in federal discussions on fire and emergency services.[1][2]
By 1978, the organisation's membership included 18 state associations, 106 fire departments, and four corporate members. The NVFC subsequently became involved in federal fire-service policy and represented volunteer responders in discussions involving the United States Fire Administration and other national organisations.[3][4]
As of 2025, the organisation reported more than 42,000 members.[5]
Activities
The NVFC advocates for volunteer fire, EMS, and rescue services before the United States Congress, federal agencies, and national standards-setting organisations. It has participated in national fire-service task forces, work groups, and standards committees.
The organisation also provides training, educational materials, and programs for volunteer emergency-service personnel and departments. One of its programs, Fire Corps, was launched in 2004 to encourage community members to assist fire and EMS departments with non-operational activities, including fire prevention education, fundraising, administration, and public relations.[6]
The NVFC also operates the Make Me A Firefighter campaign, which promotes recruitment into volunteer fire and emergency services, and provides educational and training resources through its online programs.[7]
