Musinsa Co., Ltd. (Korean: 주식회사 무신사) is a South Korean e-commerce company and clothing brand focused on casual wear and streetwear.[1] It operates one of the largest online fashion platforms in South Korea and produces its own private-label brand, Musinsa Standard.[2][3]
History
Musinsa was founded in February 2001 by Cho Man-ho (then a high-school student) as an online community on the portal Freechal for sneaker enthusiasts. The community was originally named "무진장 신발 사진이 많은 곳" (Mujinjang sinbal sajin-i maneun got), which translates as "a place with a massive amount of sneaker photos." The name "Musinsa" is an acronym taken from this phrase.[1]
In 2003, after Freechal introduced paid-community policies, Cho launched the independent website musinsa.com. The site expanded beyond sneakers into broader street-fashion content, including street photography and the launch of Musinsa Magazine in 2005.[2]
In 2009 the company opened Musinsa Store, an online marketplace selling authentic and exclusive designer and streetwear brands.[2][4] Musinsa was formally incorporated in 2012.[1]
In 2017 it launched its private-label line Musinsa Standard, which offers affordable high-quality basic and modern casual wear and is frequently compared to Uniqlo.[2][5] Offline flagship stores for the brand later opened, including a location in Gangnam.[6]
In 2019 Musinsa reached unicorn status after securing investment led by Sequoia Capital at a valuation of USD 800 million; it became the first Korean fashion platform (and the 10th Korean company overall) to do so.[1]
In 2021 Musinsa acquired 29CM and StyleShare to expand its customer base and product range.[2][7]
The company launched the Musinsa Global Store in 2022, serving multiple international markets including the United States, Japan, Singapore and Australia, and has continued to expand both online and offline (with further plans for markets such as China).[1]
Controversies
Tax investigation
In August 2026, the Seoul Regional Office of the National Tax Service launched a special (non-regular) tax investigation into Musinsa. According to the Legal Times, on 21 August investigators from the office's Investigation Bureau 4 — a unit dedicated to non-regular investigations focused on suspected tax evasion rather than routine audits — were dispatched to Musinsa's headquarters in Seongdong District, Seoul, to secure tax and accounting records.[8]
The investigation reportedly centers on transactions and fund flows between Musinsa, its founder Cho Man-ho — the company's largest shareholder with a 51.71% stake as of the first quarter of 2026 — and Lapel (라펠), a real estate investment company founded by Cho in 2020 and wholly owned by him. Lapel has been pursuing a senior residence development in the Hannam-dong area of Yongsan District, Seoul, through a special-purpose subsidiary that raised a ₩160 billion bridge loan, maturing in September 2026, to purchase the project site. Cho reportedly pledged a substantial portion of his Musinsa shares as collateral in the course of arranging Lapel's operating funds and borrowings.
Tax authorities are reportedly examining whether appropriate consideration was exchanged when Cho pledged his Musinsa shares for Lapel's financing, whether improper economic benefits were transferred to Lapel, whether the unlisted shares involved in any related-party transactions were appropriately valued, whether the borrowed funds were actually used for the development project, and whether Musinsa or its affiliates bore costs on Lapel's behalf. If tax evasion or improper transfers of benefits were to be confirmed, the case could reportedly lead to additional corporate tax assessments as well as personal income and gift tax liabilities for Cho. As of August 2026, no findings had been announced.
