Ministry of Energy (Chile)

The Ministry of Energy (Spanish: Ministerio de Energía) is an entity created during the late part of the first presidency of Michelle Bachelet (2006−2010) after the releasing of the N°20.402 Decrete of Law[1] on 1 February 2010.
Since that date, the current minister was separated from the Ministry of Mining. Its current minister is Ximena Rincón.[2]
In mid-August 2026, Minister Rincón publicly expressed regret after an electricity project in the Maule region was rejected following environmental concerns raised by local groups and highlighted by actor Leonardo DiCaprio regarding the protection of the Pehuenche frog. During the Ministry of Energy's public accountability address in Molina, Rincón highlighted that renewables now make up 70% of Chile's installed electricity matrix. She showcased the successful conversion of the historic coal-fired Tocopilla plant into a clean energy hub featuring Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Additionally, she emphasized short-term legal measures to provide relief on household electricity tariffs while projecting systemic tariff reductions. Rincón also led a high-level ministerial delegation to Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation to advance long-term natural gas integration between Chile and Argentina. The effort aims to establish stable, long-term contracts and position Chilean ports as a logistics platform for exporting South American energy to Pacific markets. [3]
