Ash Wednesday (Spanish: Miércoles de ceniza) is a 1958 Mexican drama film directed by Roberto Gavaldón. It was entered into the 8th Berlin International Film Festival.[1]

Plot

Set in the 1920s during the Cristero War, the narrative follows Victoria Rivas (María Félix), a woman who developed a profound resentment toward the Catholic Church after being sexually assaulted by a priest in her youth. Following the trauma, Victoria turns away from religion, builds a successful career as an affluent brothel owner, and operates as a secret government informant against the Cristero rebels.

Victoria later encounters and falls in love with Dr. Federico Lamadrid (Arturo de Córdova), a prominent physician. However, unknown to Victoria, Lamadrid is an ordained priest living in hiding and operating clandestinely during the anti-clerical state persecutions. The romance becomes a conflict for Victoria when she discovers his true identity as a member of the clergy she despises.
