The Mayor of Las Anod is the chief executive of the city of Las Anod, the administrative capital of the North Eastern State of Somalia and one of the principal cities of the Sool region.

The office has historically operated under different local administrative arrangements. Following the 2023 Las Anod conflict, the city came under the administration of SSC-Khatumo. The political and administrative structure was subsequently developed into the North Eastern State of Somalia, a federal member state of Somalia, covering the regions of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn.[1][2]

The current mayor is Abdirahim Ali Ismail, also known as Qase. He was elected by the Las Anod municipal council on 20 June 2021 and succeeded Abdiaziz Hussein Hassan.[3]

Municipal administration

The municipal administration is headed by the mayor and includes the deputy mayor and municipal secretary.

History

In the 2021 Somaliland municipal elections, Abdirahim Ali Ismail was elected to the Las Anod municipal council. At the council's first sitting on 20 June 2021, councillors elected him mayor.[4]

Following his appointment, municipal authorities introduced a number of administrative and security measures in Las Anod, including neighbourhood security committees and the registration of houses and residents.[5][6]

2023 conflict and subsequent administration

In January 2023, amid protests and clashes in Las Anod, Abdirahim said that the city had calmed after overnight fighting and that municipal authorities and community elders were working to stabilize the situation. He also reported the withdrawal of military units in an effort to reduce harm to civilians.[7]

As the conflict intensified in February 2023, Abdirahim called for the withdrawal of forces from the city and rejected descriptions of local residents as terrorists.[8]

During the conflict and its aftermath, reporting continued to identify Abdirahim as mayor of Las Anod.[9]

North Eastern State of Somalia

In July 2025, a conference held in Las Anod declared the formation of the North Eastern State of Somalia and adopted a regional constitution.[10]

In August 2025, the Federal Government of Somalia announced the completion of the state-formation process and described the North Eastern State as a federal member state of Somalia, covering Sool, Sanaag and Cayn.[11]

In January 2026, the Federal Government of Somalia described Las Anod as the capital of the North Eastern State during the inauguration of the state's administration.[12]

Abdirahim Ali Ismail has continued to be identified as mayor during the administrative transition. His term is therefore listed as 2021–present pending a documented change in office.
