Marianthi "Maro" Kontou (Greek: Μαριάνθη (Μάρω) Κοντού; 21 June 1934 – 15 July 2026) was a Greek actress and politician.[1] She performed in the theatre and in more than sixty films from 1954 onwards.[2] Kontou was a member of the Hellenic Parliament from 1999 to 2007, representing the Athens A constituency and elected as a member of New Democracy.[1]
Kontou died from lung cancer on 15 July 2026, at the age of 92, following a period of hospitalisation for respiratory and pulmonary conditions at the Attikon Hospital in Athens.[2][3] Prior to her death, medical officials had monitored her status closely within the hospital's cardiology clinic.[4] Following the announcement of her death, tributes from the Greek cultural and political sectors honored her dual legacy as a premier figure of the golden age of Greek cinema and a dedicated public servant.[2]
