Maceta de Nube Verde (also known as Maceta de Gresquí) is an island in Venezuela covering an area of 7 hectares (0.07 km²), located in the Caribbean Sea within the Lesser Antilles. Geographically, it forms part of the Los Roques Archipelago and administratively belongs to the Francisco de Miranda Insular Territory and the Los Roques Archipelago National Park in the Federal Dependencies of Venezuela.[1][2][3]

History

The island was part of the Captaincy General of Venezuela, and after independence from Spain, it became part of the Colón Territory, and later the Federal Dependencies (since 1938) and the Los Roques Single Area Authority (from 1990 until 2011). In 1972, it became part of the protected area known as Los Roques Archipelago National Park.[4] In 2011, it was included in the Francisco de Miranda Insular Territory, which was created by an organic law decree.

Geography

It is a 0.07-square-kilometer island located south of the Ensenada de Los Corales and the main Los Roques Archipelago, west of Cayo Nube Verde (with which it should not be confused) and the key called Maceta de Cote[5] or Maceta de Sal.[6] Like the rest of the archipelago, it features a predominantly warm and dry climate.

The island is a small island cay situated in the southern sector of the Los Roques Archipelago. It sits atop the southern barrier reef, east of Cayo Sal and west of Cayo Nube Verde and the Boca de Cote area. Its location directly exposes it to two markedly contrasting marine regimes: to the south and southwest, it directly borders the open ocean through a steep drop into deep blue waters, while to the north and northeast, it is sheltered by shallow turquoise and emerald waters forming part of the archipelago's interior lagoon.

From an aerial perspective, the island features an elongated, slightly arched shape oriented northwest to southeast. Its perimeter combines distinct coastal margins depending on wave exposure and currents. Along the southwest flank exposed to open sea, there is a narrow beach strip of coral sand and surf sediments shaped by continuous wave action. In contrast, the north and northeast edges are much calmer, characterized by a gentle transition into shallow coral reefs and seagrass patches.
