List of Baldur's Gate characters

Baldur's Gate NPCs are non-player characters (NPCs) which interact with the player in the Baldur's Gate series of computer games. Many of these characters can interact with each other during the game, and some of these characters can also join the player's party.

The NPCs recruited become playable characters directly controlled by the player. The player can employ a maximum number of five NPC party members at any one time, requiring the player to find a balance between strong melee warriors, characters who wield divine magic, characters who wield arcane magic, and those who provide different types of auxiliary support, such as thieves.

Development

Characters later used in Baldur's Gate originated in tabletop Dungeons & Dragons sessions held by James Ohlen.[1] Most of the Baldur's Gate characters originated as PCs from two D&D campaigns—Forgotten Realms and a Dark Sun/Planescape sequel—then were reshaped for the game while keeping their original names.[2]

For Baldur's Gate II, Kevin Martens notes that "Some of the characters were taken from previous AD&D campaigns while others were made specifically for the games."[3]

Sarevok's foster father is a central figure in fomenting the iron crisis in Baldur's Gate to gain power for the Iron Throne, as well as the doppelganger infiltration of merchant rivals. His goal is to take advantage of the ensuring chaos orchestrated by the Iron Throne to kill his fellow Bhaalspawn and ascend into divinity himself.[5] Sarevok reappears in Throne of Bhaal where the player character may restore him to life and recruit him as a party member.[6] The main antagonist, the foster son of Rieltar Anchev is in truth a Bhaalspawn fueled with great ambition and unholy might.

NameVoice actorRaceClassAlignmentDescription
AjantisJason MarsdenHumanPaladinLawful GoodRighteous and somewhat naive, Ajantis Ilvastarr is a newly trained paladin operating under the Order of Radiant Heart. He has been sent by his superior Keldorn Firecam to investigate and wipe out the bandits plaguing the Sword Coast. He is a follower of Helm and hails from Waterdeep.
AloraAmber HoodHalflingThiefChaotic GoodAn excessively cheerful and sweet halfling girl, whose curiosity prompts her to frequently poke her nose into forbidden and dangerous territory. When she was younger, her curiosity caused trouble for her parents, whose attempts to stifle her personality inspired her to leave on her own.
CoranBrian GeorgeElfFighter/ThiefChaotic GoodCoran is an adventurous and womanizing archer. He originally lived in the Forest of Tethir, but left due to dissatisfaction with its relative calmness. He will flirt with any female party member. He has unknowingly fathered a half-elf child with a young mage in Baldur's Gate after a brief fling, enraging the mage's husband.
DynaheirJennifer HaleHumanInvokerLawful GoodDynaheir is "wychlaran" witch from Rashemen and is traveling alongside her champion Minsc, who has sworn to protect her. She and Minsc have been sent to examine if the prophecy of the Bhaalspawn is true. In her search, she is taken captive by a group of gnolls and held prisoner at their island stronghold. She shows herself to be a capable wizard, but has a very steel-set attitude, not thinking much of what anyone else has to offer. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Dynaheir in the party.
ImoenMelissa DisneyHumanThiefNeutral GoodImoen is the player character's childhood friend and fellow ward of their foster father Gorion, living in Candlekeep where they were raised.[7] She is a loyal companion throughout the original Baldur's Gate series, and her skills as an expert thief may be put to use throughout the series.[5] Childlike and naive by nature, she is forced to endure a series of traumatic experiences during Shadows of Amn; she is tortured along with the rest of her companions, and is later arrested and incarcerated by an organisation of magic-users known as the Cowled Wizards for unlicensed magic use.[8] Imoen's popularity with the Baldur Gate series fandom was not anticipated by Bioware; the original purpose of her inclusion in Baldur's Gate was to "fill a non-psychotic-thief gap in the early levels" late in the development cycle.[9] A childhood friend of the player character, who has acted like a little sister to the protagonist for all of their childhood. She is the first character that offers to join the protagonist, near the beginning of the game. Orphaned as a child and raised by Winthrop the innkeeper of Candlekeep, her origins are just as obscure as the player character's. According to BioWare writer Luke Kristjanson,[10] Her character was a late addition to fill a non-psychotic-thief gap in the early levels. We had no recording budget left, so I assembled her lines by editing voice-over left from a scrapped demo. The original character was a guard named Pique. That's why she has no standalone confrontations / interactions with other party members. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Imoen in the party. The wife of Dean Anderson, a team member who later served as the art director of the 2009 role-playing game Dragon Age: Origins, was the basis for Imoen's facial features as depicted in her character portrait.[11] Her epilogue reveals that some time after her saga, she travelled with Elminster and Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun, as well as founded an influential thieves' guild.[12] Dakota Grabowski of GameZone listed Imoen as one of the top BioWare created teammates, commenting "As the first character to join the squad in Baldur's Gate I, Imoen essentially becomes troubled by torture in Baldur's Gate II, creating a dilemma that players will want to protect this vulnerable rogue from all danger. Her sweet and sugary demeanor only aided in her appeal rating skyrocketing to unparalleled levels."[13]
KhalidJim MeskimenHalf-ElfFighterNeutral GoodKhalid is an effete half-elf fighter, member of the Harpers and husband of Jaheira. He is a nervous, peace-loving warrior with a pronounced stutter.[5] Khalid, like certain other companions, comes with Jaheira as an inseparable pair; if one leaves or is removed the party, the other will follow suit.[14] Khalid is murdered by Irenicus in Shadows of Amn, widowing Jaheira and leaving her with survivor's guilt.[15] Jaheira's husband, and almost her polar opposite. Khalid is a peace-loving warrior with a pronounced stutter. Like Jaheira, he is a member of the Harpers. Jaheira and Khalid were friends of Gorion, and Gorion leaves instructions for the protagonist to meet with them after he is killed in an ambush at the beginning of the game. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Khalid in the party.
KivanRob PaulsenElfRangerChaotic GoodA powerful elf archer, Kivan's wife was killed by the ogre bandit leader Tazok, and as a result he is on a quest of vengeance to kill ogres and bandits and to ultimately hunt down Tazok as revenge for his wife's death. Kivan is undiplomatic, cold, and extremely gruff; however, he also compliments his companions regardless of whether they thank him or not, and frequently refers to the entire group as a whole ("It is time for *us* to rest"), as opposed to referring only to himself. If placed in the lead position, his response is the most humble of all the companions.
MinscJim CummingsHumanRangerNeutral GoodMinsc is a berserker ranger from the human nation of Rashemen, with a strong though somewhat unhinged desire to uphold good and be heroic. His animal companion is a hamster named Boo, who he believes is a "miniature giant space hamster" and consults for advice.[16] Minsc is originally tasked with serving as a bodyguard to the Rashemi witch Dynaheir as part of his rite of passage, and is inseparable from her once she is rescued. He is a potentially recruitable companion throughout the original Baldur's Gate series, outliving Dynaheir, who is murdered by Irenicus prior to the events of Shadows of Amn. Minsc is a berserker ranger, with a strong desire to uphold good and be heroic, though with an extreme fervor that causes those around him to regard him as possibly insane. His animal companion is a hamster named Boo, who he believes is a "miniature giant space hamster" and consults for advice. Minsc is originally tasked with serving as a bodyguard to the witch Dynaheir as part of a rite of passage. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Minsc in the party.
YeslickBill FarmerDwarfFighter/ClericLawful GoodYeslick Orothiar is a laid-back, good-natured dwarven cleric of Moradin and Clangeddin Silverbeard. He was once a blacksmith of the Iron Throne, but was betrayed when he casually mentioned the location of his clan's long abandoned ore mine to them. He is encountered as one of the Iron Throne's prisoners.

BranwenBernadette SullivanHumanClericTrue NeutralA loyal warrior maiden of the god Tempus. Branwen was turned to stone by the bandit mage Tranzig, and ended up as a circus attraction. If the party uses a scroll of stone to flesh to cure her of her condition, she will offer to join them in their quest. Later in the adventure the party will come face to face with Tranzig, and after defeating him, Branwen will remain in the party.
FaldornHeidi ShannonHumanDruidTrue NeutralFaldorn is a member of the Shadow Druids, a militant sect of druids that believes in the violent struggle of Nature against Man. She disagrees vehemently with Jaheira and her mainstream Druidic views of man co-existing peacefully alongside nature. However, despite her militant beliefs, Faldorn's speech and behavior is mellow and laid-back.
GarrickDee Bradley BakerHumanBardChaotic NeutralA free-spirited bard with a most lively outlook on life and love. He was part of a popular troupe called the Dale Wind Troubadours, but left after he discovered the performances were used to distract the audience from thievery. He sings several tunes, mostly about his own bravery.
JaheiraHeidi ShannonHalf-ElfFighter/DruidTrue NeutralJaheira is a half-elf warrior druid and member of the Harpers, a semi-secret organization dedicated to promoting good and maintaining a balance between civilization and nature. Gorion leaves instructions for the player character to meet her and her husband Khalid after he is killed, although it is optional to recruit the couple into the party. Jaheira is available as a companion in the beginning of Shadows of Amn, and is revealed to be widowed soon afterwards. She is a potential love interest for a male player character if certain conditions are met; Gaider noted the romantic subplot itself was lengthy in terms of content, but riddled with bugs.[17] Jaheira is one of the most popular and well-regarded characters in the Baldur's Gate series.[18][16] A Druid warrior and member of the Harpers, Jaheira is strong and intelligent, but also very proud, causing her to be highly domineering and overly self-confident. As a Druid, she must observe a keen balance in her way of life, and demands the same from her companions. Gorion leaves instructions to meet her and her husband Khalid after he is killed. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Jaheira in the party.
QuayleJeff BennettGnomeCleric/IllusionistChaotic NeutralQuayle is foul-tempered and arrogant and believes that he is a genius while others around him are unintelligent. He worships Baravar Cloakshadow and is convinced that he has nearly mastered sorcery.
SafanaDiane PershingHumanThiefChaotic NeutralSafana is a sultry female thief with a dark history and a sensuous demeanor, who has always gotten through life by using her feminine wiles to manipulate men into doing her bidding. She grew up in Calimport as the daughter of a nobleman, but was frustrated by his protectiveness and ran away to join a pirate crew. She fell out of favor with the captain and escaped from the ship when it was at the port of Baldur's Gate.
SkieGrey DeLisleHumanThiefTrue NeutralThe innocent and naive daughter of Duke Entar Silvershield, Skie Silvershield enjoys sneaking out of the safety of her father's well-guarded estate, and holds unrealistic dreams of a life of adventure. She awaits being "rescued" by Eldoth, her lover. Once on the road, however, she complains frequently.
XanJeff BennettElfEnchanterLawful NeutralXan is an enchanter of the Greycloak clan of elves from Evereska, who has been sent to investigate the political turmoil of the Sword Coast when he is captured and held prisoner by the Iron Throne. When the player's character encounters him, he is unarmed and severely injured. He is very pessimistic, and often makes negative comments while expressing surprise at success.

Evil

EdwinJim MeskimenHumanConjurerLawful EvilEdwin Odesseiron is a haughty member of the Red Wizards of Thay who seeks the player character's cooperation to kill a potential companion, the witch Dynaheir, and will join the party if the player character agrees to help him. He may also be recruited in Shadows of Amn, where he may be encountered as an agent employed by the Shadow Thieves of Amn. Progressing Edwin's personal side quest to pursue the Nether Scrolls will result in him changing sex after he attempts to invoke the scroll's power; while the story arc itself is treated as purely comic relief with no connection whatsoever to a real-world issue, Esther MacCallum-Stewart noted the subplot as an early example of an LGBT theme being included in a Bioware-made RPG.[19] Edwin Odesseiron is an arrogant member of the Red Wizards of Thay, and has been dispatched to the Sword Coast region to assassinate Dynaheir. When Edwin is first encountered, he asks for the player's help in hunting her down. This quest is in direct contrast to the one received from Minsc, who wishes to save Dynaheir from a band of gnolls. Edwin enjoys insulting the player character with his haughty and sarcastic remarks, and frequently mutters under his breath about how he intends to manipulate and overthrow his fellow party members.
EldothNeil RossHumanBardNeutral EvilEldoth Kron is a sleazy, thrill-seeking dilettante who makes a living seducing rich women and living off their money. His latest scheme is to elope with his current lover, Skie Silvershield, then blackmail her father by claiming to have "kidnapped" her and threatening to harm her if he is not paid on a regular basis. A male chauvinist, Eldoth treats Skie quite badly, which earns him the hatred of both Garrick and Shar-Teel.
KagainJohn MarianoDwarfFighterLawful EvilKagain is a greedy mercenary who runs a caravan escort service out of his shop in Beregost. He asks the player to help him search for a particularly important lost caravan carrying the son of Duke Silvershield, but when he learns that he has lost the caravan, wary of Silvershield's wrath, Kagain decides to abandon his business and accompany the player's party on their adventure.
MontaronEarl BoenHalflingFighter/ThiefNeutral EvilMontaron is Xzar's partner. Less outlandish than the game's other evil NPCs, his temperament is of the subtly threatening sort rather than the flamboyantly egomaniacal. While there is mutual loathing between him and Xzar, Montaron's fear of his superiors' wrath prevents him from harming or abandoning him.
Shar-TeelJennifer DarlingHumanFighterChaotic EvilShar-Teel is an extremely aggressive and bloodthirsty warrior who has a strong hatred of males, and the Flaming Fist mercenary company in particular. If defeated in a duel by a male member of the player's party after issuing a challenge, she is impressed and grudgingly pledges to join the group. Later in the game it is revealed that Shar-Teel is the daughter of Angelo Dosan.
TiaxJohn MarianoGnomeCleric/ThiefChaotic EvilTiax is a short-tempered, megalomaniacal gnome with delusional and unrealistic goals of world domination. He is a cleric of Cyric, the current God of Murder, and like his patron deity is quite mad.
ViconiaGrey DeLisleDrowClericNeutral EvilViconia DeVir is a drow outcast and Cleric of Shar, the goddess of darkness, night, and loss. She is a recruitable companion throughout the original Baldur's Gate series, and a potential love interest for a male player character in Shadows of Amn, embodying the femme fatale archetype;[17] if her relationship with the player character continues into Throne of Bhaal, a possible ending in the game's epilogue would reveal that Viconia is murdered by agents of the drow goddess Lolth.[18] Exiled from the Underdark, Viconia DeVir is attempting to make a life for herself on the surface. Having renounced Lolth after refusing to kill a baby, Viconia worships Shar. She looks down harshly on surface-dwellers and her inexperience leaves surface customs and laws strange to her. Although she despises compassion and weakness, she is still significantly more polite than the game's other evil NPCs.
XzarFrank WelkerHumanNecromancerChaotic EvilXzar is dubbed "the Mad Wizard" by his companion Montaron, and Xzar seemingly suffers from split personality. His grasp on reality seems to be somewhat tenuous, causing him to occasionally make unusual outbursts. He wants the player to journey with him and Montaron to the Nashkel mines in order to investigate the iron shortage threatening the city of Baldur's Gate. Xzar and Montaron have been sent by the Zhentarim, to learn the origins of this sudden iron shortage, as false rumors have been spread of the Zhentarim's involvement with instigating this crisis, thus putting the clandestine organization under increased scrutiny. Despite his personality, Xzar is in fact held in high esteem by his superiors.

Good

NameVoice actorRaceClassAlignmentDescription
AerieKath SoucieAvarielCleric/MageLawful GoodAerie is an avariel, an elven subspecies that possess wings, but she lost hers as a child when she was imprisoned in a circus by slavers.[18] She was eventually rescued and restored to health by Quayle, a gnome and potential companion in Baldur's Gate. Aerie is relatively young and inexperienced during the events of Baldur's Gate II, and embodies the damsel in distress archetype.[17] She is a recruitable companion, and potential love interest for a male player character in Shadows of Amn; if the romance continues into the Throne of Bhaal, she will eventually bear the player character's child.[15] Aerie lived in Faenya-Dail until she was captured by slavers and sold to the circus, where she was kept in a cage which caused her wings to atrophy until they had to be forcibly removed. She is encountered in Waukeen's Promenade, where she is working in the circus under ringmaster Quayle, who saved her from the previous ringmaster. Once the circus has been cleared of its evil illusions, she may join the party. Minsc may eventually adopt her as his new witch. She is naive, physically weak, and sometimes childish, but she is highly intelligent. She dually venerates her divine patron, the gnome god Baervan Wildwanderer, and her traditional Avariel goddess, Aerdrie Faenya. It is possible for a male protagonist to romance her. If the romance continues into the Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal expansion, she has the protagonist's child, though Aerie will refuse if the protagonist is of evil alignment. Although kind and often caring of her friends, Aerie still holds in thoughts of her wings, and often becomes depressed when speaking of her past.
ImoenMelissa DisneyHumanThief/MageNeutral GoodTroubled by torture inflicted upon her by the main antagonist Irenicus, Imoen loses some of her zeal from the first game, especially as it dawns on her that she, too, is a Bhaalspawn. Still, Imoen remains somewhat cheerful and kind towards her companions. She remains a faithful companion to the player character and is one of the fundamental characters in the main plot. Much of the game is centralized on rescuing her. She can be found alongside the player at the start of the game.
KeldornRoger L. JacksonHumanInquisitorLawful GoodKeldorn Firecam is a dedicated paladin of Torm and the superior of Ajantis. He is experienced and wise. He has a sub-quest involving his family where the player character can voluntarily allow him to leave the party.
MazzyJennifer HaleHalflingFighterLawful GoodMazzy Fentan is a brave fighter who wanted to be a Paladin, though being a halfling disallowed this. She and her Fentan Knights sally forth all over Amn from their town of Trademeet doing good deeds.
MinscJim CummingsHumanRangerChaotic GoodMinsc is a berserker ranger, with a strong desire to uphold good and be heroic, though with an extreme fervor that causes those around him to regard him as possibly insane. His animal companion is a hamster named Boo, who he believes is a "miniature giant space hamster" and consults for advice. Minsc is originally tasked with serving as a bodyguard to the witch Dynaheir as part of a rite of passage. After Dynaheir is killed by the mage Jon Irenicus, Minsc offers his services to the protagonist in the pursuit of justice.
NaliaGrey DeLisleHumanThief/MageNeutral GoodThe daughter of a lord, Nalia de'Arnise has little in common with other nobles and regularly sneaks out of her castle at night to help the poor and needy. Though compassionate, she can be noticeably haughty; she is willing to help those lower in class, but not willing to entirely forget their class distinctions. Nalia teams up with the player character to help save her family home from attack. In the Throne of Bhaal, Nalia undergoes a change of heart that makes her more genuinely compassionate towards the lower classes and more pragmatic in terms with her goals.
ValygarJeff OsterhageHumanStalkerNeutral GoodValygar's family has long lived in the shadow of magic. His own mother went mad from it and was destroyed; consequently, Valygar is disdainful for all things magical. If the player character is a mage or other frequent practitioner of magic, Valygar will be badly predisposed to him, especially if the magic in question is often used to perform ill deeds. He is found as a criminal wanted by the Cowled Wizards.

AnomenRob PaulsenHumanFighter/ClericLawful NeutralAnomen Delryn is a warrior priest of Helm, and an acolyte of the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart. Deeply insecure due to his father's treatment of him, Anomen presents himself as a vain and arrogant character, frequently bragging about battles he most likely never fought. He is a potential companion, as well as love interest in Shadows of Amn if the player character is female. Depending on the player's actions, he may succeed or fail at his knighthood quest to ascend as a full member of his Order, the outcome of which changes his personality and in-game alignment.[15] David Gaider noted that Anomen's romance subplot was his first attempt as a writer employed by Bioware.[17] Anomen Delryn is an acolyte of the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart. He is vain and frequently brags about battles he most likely never fought. Depending on the player's actions, he may succeed or fail at his knighthood quest, which can change his alignment to either Lawful Good or Chaotic Neutral. If the player character is female, she may establish a romance with Anomen.
CerndJason MarsdenHumanShapeshifterTrue neutralCernd is detained in a prison located in the town of Trademeet. He needs the player character's assistance in investigating attacks upon the town. Cernd has an even, calm disposition and a habit of overusing nature-related metaphors. Cernd's lycanthropy allows him to take the form of a werewolf. Cernd was once a city dweller, resulting in some loose ends from his former life resurfacing, as he sets foot in Athkatla.
Haer'DalisMichael BellTieflingBlade (sub-class of Bard)Chaotic NeutralHaer'Dalis has the blood of a fiend within his ancestry, giving him unusual characteristics, among these being his blue hair and an aura that makes Primes, or dwellers of the Prime Material Plane, nervous. He is witty and charming, having crossed the planes with a group of troubadours who have set up a temporary home in a playhouse beneath the Five Flagons Inn in the Bridge District of Athkatla.
JaheiraHeidi ShannonHalf-ElfFighter/DruidTrue neutralHer character mellows a little from the first installment due to the death of her husband Khalid, and probably also due to the strife that she encounters with her fellow party members. However, she still enjoys nothing more than to take authority in certain situations, and it shows in her banter with other party members whom she perceives as naive and unschooled in the ways of the world. If the player character is male, he may have a romance with Jaheira. She can be found at the start of the game alongside the player.
JanJack RothGnomeThief/IllusionistChaotic NeutralJan Jansen is a gnome, a race with an average lifespan of over 350 years,[18] and the eccentric inventor of multiple gadgets which only he knows how to use, and tends to ramble on with lengthy stories that never get to the point.[17] He is a recruitable companion in Shadows of Amn; he is encountered peddling his wares in the city of Amn, which in actuality are dangerous weapons in their own right. Like most gnomes, Jan Jansen is very eccentric, and tends to ramble on with stories that never get to the point. He is encountered while peddling his wares, which in actuality are dangerous weapons in their own right. His own weapon, a special crossbow entitled the "Flasher Master Bruiser" is so complicated that only he can use it, as are most of Jan's custom items.
YoshimoMaurice LaMarcheHumanBounty HunterTrue NeutralYoshimo is a bounty hunter rogue from Kara-Tur who is encountered in Irenicus' complex early in Shadows of Amn, and offers to join the party in order to increase their odds of escape and survival. If taken to Spellhold, where Irenicus and Imoen are incarcerated by the Cowled Wizards, Yoshimo reveals the terrible secret he had been hiding: he was under the thrall of Irenicus all along, and his purpose is to betray the player character as part of the mage's contingency plan.[22] He dies in battle with the party regardless of the player character's choices.[14] Yoshimo is the only Shadows of Amn companion who is not available for the player character to recruit in Throne of Bhaal. The player first meets Yoshimo in Irenicus' dungeon shortly after passing through the first portal. Yoshimo is a charming, but sly and shifty character. If Yoshimo is taken to Spellhold along with the party it is revealed that he was working alongside Irenicus to trap the party and was forced to with a geas. Before his death he asks the protagonist to take his heart to a priest of Ilmater so that he might be redeemed for his dishonor. He is from Kara-Tur.

EdwinJim MeskimenHumanConjurerLawful EvilSince the first game, Edwin Odesseiron has found a new employer amongst the Shadow Thieves, though he still seeks more power for himself. Edwin indicates that he has become a rogue wizard, and is no longer held in esteem by Thay. Edwin has a side-quest which requires entering the Graveyard District tombs and challenging an apparently deranged Lich. After the Lich is destroyed, Edwin will recover a powerful and ancient artifact called the Nether Scroll, which he will then spend some time deciphering. Casting the spell inscribed upon the scroll changes him into a woman, which results in teasing from the other party members. This then leads to an encounter with Thayvian wizards who reveal that Edwin is now an exile. Edwin then returns to normal and the party is attacked by a Thayan. In the epilogue of Throne of Bhaal, it is implied that he was permanently transformed into a female by Elminster.
KorganBill MartinDwarfBerserkerChaotic EvilKorgan Bloodaxe is an evil-aligned dwarven berserker, who could be found at the Copper Coronet Inn. He is highly rated as a worthy companion, not only for his combat skills which would prove invaluable for an evil-aligned party, but also for the quality of the banter between him and any good-aligned characters in the party.[5][18]Korgan Bloodaxe is an aggressive mercenary who frequently displays hostilities towards others and refuses to talk about himself (except possibly with Mazzy, if she's also in the party). He initially joins the player character to get help with obtaining a book.
SarevokKevin Michael RichardsonHumanFighterChaotic EvilSarevok Anchev is the main character's half-brother, who appears as a ghost near the beginning of the content of Throne of Bhaal. He helps the player character exit the Pocket Plane once he receives a piece of the soul of either the player character or Imoen, thereby bringing him back to life. After showing the player character the way out, he offers his services. Although his previous death has stripped him of all of his Bhaalspawn powers, he still remains a formidable melee fighter. The player can change Sarevok's alignment to Chaotic Good by setting a good example, and forgiving Sarevok for his past transgressions.
ViconiaGrey DeLisleDrowClericNeutral EvilViconia DeVir is on the run from persecution because of her race. She is caught by fanatics of Athkatla in the government district after blowing her cover as a Drow, a sworn enemy of the humans in Amn. She survives if the player character rescues her from a mob attempting to burn her at the stake. If the player character is male and of any race other than an elf, he may have a romance with Viconia. In Throne of Bhaal this can change her alignment to True Neutral.

Recurring Baldur's Gate party members

Several characters from the first game make a comeback, some of which as NPCs that can join the player's party. Other NPCs appear only in smaller roles, mostly to supply the player with quests. Because Baldur's Gate II does not check the status of these characters at the end of the first game, they appear even if they perished in the course of the previous adventure.

  • Edwin, Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc and Viconia: (See above).
  • Ajantis: Served as a paladin the Order of the Radiant Heart in the Windspear Hills. The player kills him due to an unavoidable accident in which Ajantis, along with a group of other paladins, has an illusion cast over him, making them look like monsters. The same goes for the player's party as well, as Ajantis' group attacks the players on sight. He can be recognized only by Keldorn (or Sir Anomen, but only if he have passed the test and became a Radiant Heart member).
  • Branwen and Xan: They join the player during the game's tutorials though do not make an appearance in the main campaign.
  • Coran and Safana: They can be found at the Tethir Forest Area near the log cabin. Coran enlists the player's help in rescuing Safana from a group of wolfweres. Safana was actually working with the wolfweres to lead the player into a trap, but she is betrayed and killed by the wolfweres who then attack the player and Coran.
  • Dynaheir: According to Minsc, Dynaheir was killed by Irenicus shortly before the game begins.
  • Faldorn: She has taken over the druids' grove and the player character is forced to slay her if the player character talks to her. If the player character is a druid of level 14 or above then talking to her will result in the player character becoming a "Great Druid". She can not be killed out of a challenge and has the ability to shapeshift into a panther.
  • Garrick: He can be found in the Temple district of Athkatla attempting to woo his new beloved, the Lady Irlana near the High Hall of the Radiant Heart. His efforts were assisted by a gnome named Cyrando (a reference to Cyrano de Bergerac) who has a good head for love poetry but shies himself from the Lady as he thought himself inferior even though he loves her. Over a period of time, the player can notice the events of this romance as a third party. Eventually Lady Irlana and Cyrando are married and Garrick runs off with the bridesmaid.
  • Khalid: His dead body is discovered in Irenicus' dungeon. Jaheira clearly misses him throughout the game and is deeply affected by his absence. He appears as a ghost in Throne of Bhaal if the main character has a romance with Jaheira.
  • Montaron and Xzar: The player can meet Xzar at the Docks district in Athkatla, where he will attempt to employ the main character to infiltrate the Harpers to search for Montaron, whom Xzar believes was captured and turned into a bird by the Harpers for an unknown heinous crime. When the player presents the bird believed to be Montaron to Xzar, it turns out to be a Harper assassin who then kills Xzar for being a Zhentarim spy. Montaron's dead body can be found in a chest at a later visit to Harpers' Hold.
  • Quayle: He has doted upon an elf named Aerie who has mellowed his proud and moody nature considerably. He claims that her innocent nature has made him more tolerant towards others and has embraced a good-natured outlook of life. He has a quest in the circus tent at Waukeen's Promenade at an early part of the game.
  • Tiax: He is a "deviant" imprisoned at Spellhold and is still mentally unstable. The player can also temporarily 'team' up with him in the first encounter with Irenicus after the Spellhold dungeon trials. Regardless of the player's actions he will die in the following battle against Irenicus.

Pre-Generated Baldur's Gate Characters

Baldur's Gate includes five pre-generated characters that can be used as playable main characters, or can be used as party NPC's in the multi-player version of the game. They can be accessed using the "Import" command in the player generation screen at the beginning of a new game. The player only needs provide them with a name to begin playing.

  • A Male Neutral Good Human Cleric
  • A Male Lawful Good Dwarf Fighter
  • A Female Lawful Neutral Elf Mage
  • A Male Chaotic Good Halfling Thief
  • A Male Chaotic Neutral Gnome Illusionist Thief

There are four pre-generated characters in Baldur's Gate II usable in the same manner as those in Baldur's Gate. Unlike the first game these characters have names provided for them.

  • Rothgar: A Male Lawful Neutral Human Cleric
  • Abdel: A Male Neutral Good Human Fighter
  • Daria: A Female Chaotic Good Human Mage
  • Lessa: A Female Chaotic Neutral Elf Thief

Baldur's Gate 3

The world, alongside the player's thoughts and observations, are recounted by the game's narrator (Amelia Tyler), acting as BG3's dungeon master. While the narrator was originally planned to deliver lines contemptuously, Larian was impressed by Tyler's deadpan delivery.[23] Of the ten companions, six can be chosen as the player character in the character creator. Known as origin characters, they have a pre-set character class, race, and appearance. Although their classes can be changed, origin character personalities and backstories are sometimes related to them.[24]

  • Astarion is a hedonistic high elf vampire spawn rogue voiced by Neil Newbon and written by Stephen Rooney.[25] At the game's start, Astarion has recently escaped his vampire master, Cazador.[26][a] Newbon's performance was partly inspired by the harlequin figure of commedia dell'arte.[28] Of the origin characters, Astarion was the second most selected protagonist.[29]
  • Gale (Tim Downie) is a human wizard from the city of Waterdeep,[30] and the most popular choice for origin character playthroughs.[31]
  • Shadowheart is a half-human, half-high elf cleric of Shar, the goddess of loss,[24] portrayed by Jennifer English and written by John Corcoran.[32] Originally pitched as a Jason Bourne-style character,[33] she has no memories of her past.[34] She is the most popular romance option for players in the game.[29]
  • Lae'zel is a fanatical githyanki with a default base class of fighter.[24] She is quick to anger, disobliging, and the first companion encountered in Baldur's Gate 3.[35] Lae'zel was portrayed by Devora Wilde,[36] with Kevin VanOrd working as her lead writer.[37] Vincke said VanOrd found Lae'zel's "voice" early in development, changing least of the companions during development.[33]
  • Wyll is a human warlock folk hero who gained his powers through a pact with the demon Mizora.[35] After early access, Wyll's voice actor was changed, with Theo Solomon portraying him in the final release. Wyll's character underwent extensive rewrites following the early access.[38]
  • Karlach is a tiefling and former soldier of Avernus who is a barbarian by default. She was portrayed by Samantha Béart and written by Sarah Baylus. Karlach was heavily iterated across development. According to Béart, she was changed due to similarities to Lae'zel.[39]

The seventh origin character, the Dark Urge, cannot be recruited.[b] The Dark Urge narrative is linked closely with the main narrative. In this origin, the player is the compulsively evil spawn of Bhaal, the god of murder, and can choose to resist or indulge these desires.[41]

There are four non-origin characters who can be recruited:

  • Minthara is a dark elf Paladin, initially encountered as an enemy, whose recruitment at launch required an evil playthrough,[42] but Larian made recruiting her easier following release.[43] Written by Sarah Baylus,[33] she was portrayed by Emma Gregory.[44]
  • Halsin (Dave Jones) is a wood elf druid and the master of the druids' grove that the player visits during the game's first act. Initially not recruitable during early access, player reception to Halsin was so positive that he was given a companion role.[45]
  • Jaheira (Tracy Wiles) is a half-elf druid and leader of the Harpers, an organization dedicated to the preservation of historical lore and knowledge.
  • Minsc (Matthew Mercer) is a human ranger who carries a hamster named Boo with him; Jaheira and Minsc previously appeared in both Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.[46]

The game's overarching villain is an illithid elder brain known as the Absolute, voiced by prolific voice actress Cissy Jones.[47] Three other antagonists control the elder brain—Ketheric Thorm, Enver Gortash, and Orin the Red.[48] Actor J. K. Simmons portrays Ketheric Thorm,[49] a tragic villain planned as recruitable in early development.[50] Jason Isaacs and Maggie Robertson portray Enver Gortash and Orin the Red, respectively.[51][52] The Emperor is a mind flayer detached from the species' hive mind. A controversial, complex character,[33] and a player romance option, he was voiced by Scott Joseph.[53] Raphael, a devil, is a supporting villain encountered early who offers the player a deal to remove the parasite in their head.[54][33] Voice actor Andrew Wincott portrays Raphael as a theatrical villain influenced by Shakespeare's Iago.[55]

Notes

  1. ↑ Astarion is a high elf with a default class of rogue.[24] At a Game Developers Conference panel, Vincke showed art depicting an earlier iteration of the character as a tiefling.[27]
  2. ↑ If not selected by the player, the Dark Urge can be found, dead, during the game world.[40]
