Latin Alliance[1] is a Latino rap group formed by Chicano rapper Kid Frost[2] in 1989 under Virgin Records.[3] The short-lived collective united prominent Latino and Chicano rap artists—including Mellow Man Ace,[4] A.L.T.,[5] Markski, and Lyrical Engineer—to release their sole self-titled album Latin Alliance[6] on August 6, 1991, featuring the hit single "Lowrider (On the Boulevard)."[7]

Critical reception

Critics praised the group for constructing dynamic rhythm tracks rooted in classic funk and laced with distinct Afro-Cuban instrumentation like horns and timbales. The production utilized diverse, high-profile samples ranging from artists like War[8] and Herbie Hancock[9] to Bob James. The lead single, a remake of War's "Low Rider"[10] stood out as a high-water mark for blending classic soul/funk samples with West Coast Latin rap flavor. Reviewers highlighted the group's appealing and grounded rhymes addressing community unity, ethnic identity, social dangers, and the realities faced by undocumented immigrants. Retrospectively, critics and historians view the project as a vital milestone and a serious counterweight to lighter, pop-oriented Latin dance-rap of the early '90s.
